Nebraska football was determined to upgrade the offensive line this offseason and it appears that the Huskers are close to adding another key piece.

Rocco Spindler, a former Notre Dame offensive lineman, who entered the transfer portal after the run to the national title game, has been projected to the Huskers by a pair of On3 recruiting experts — Bryan Munson (Husker Online) and EJ Holland who covers Michigan for the Wolverine.com

Spindler visited Nebraska football on Tuesday. A new report from Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider also indicated that if Spindler chose Michigan, he wouldn’t be able to participate in spring practice due to academic requirements.

Spring ball is part of his plan. That’s one positive in favor of Nebraska. Michigan is also hosting Spindler’s teammate, Pat Cooglan, this weekend, so the Wolverines might have moved on.

Nebraska football is the favorite for Rocco Spindler

Nebraska still has time to add Spindler for the spring semester. That would allow him to take part in spring ball. The 6-foot-5, 325-pounder started 23 games for Notre Dame, including the last 13 this season. Spindler didn’t win the starting job out of fall camp, but once he got in the lineup when Billy Schrauth — who he replaced — was healthy, he changed positions because Spindler had proven to be so effective.

Spindler is ranked by 247 Sports as the No. 63 overall prospect in the transfer portal. He’s also the sixth-ranked interior offensive lineman and would be the second starting-caliber player added to the offensive line.

A commitment hasn’t been announced yet. Spindler also visited Indiana but it feels like Nebraska is the team to beat and time is winding down.
