Husker Big Red Daily: Top target trending away from Nebraska football, volleyball players address 5-for-5

Nebraska football fans are looking forward to July 6th, or at least they should be, because two top targets left in the 2027 recruiting class will be announcing commitments on that day, assuming the current schedules don’t change.

Four-star wideout Khalil Taylor, who is ranked No. 82 overall, via the 247 Sports composite rankings, is expected to choose the Huskers. He could decide sooner, but Colorado and Penn State are still pushing for his commitment.

Rivals recruiting insider Chad Simmons reinforced his confidence in Nebraska football this week, but also said that this recruitment is one that won’t truly be decided until Early National Signing Day. The Huskers will have to defend his pledge, just like Trae Taylor, Tory Pittman, Corey Hadley, and Jordan Agbanoma.

Another top target trending away from Nebraska football

The other target set to decide on July 6th is three-star cornerback Kamauri Whitfield out of Orlando, Florida. Nebraska and Florida have been battling for his commitment. Each program hosted him for an official visit, but the Gators have emerged as the favorite.

Nebraska insider Tim Verghese projected him to Florida on Tuesday, joining an earlier prediction from late May from Steve Wiltfong in favor of the Gators, who have a 98 percent chance to land Whitfield, a talented nickel cornerback.

However, the Huskers still have four four-star commitments in the secondary, including two at cornerback in Jailen Hill and Bryce Williams. Another slot corner could emerge on the board in the 2027 class, but the Huskers might just move on to 2028, with basically just Ahmad Hudson still on the board after the 6th.

Nebraska volleyball stars comment on 5-for-5

Andi Jackson and Bergen Reilly each commented on the potential return to the Nebraska volleyball team in interviews with Randy Silver. Neither player committed to a return, which would be hard to do since the Huskers are projected to have just one roster spot open.

Dani Busboom-Kelly will have some difficult decisions to make. Harper Murray and Laney Choboy are also eligible for fifth seasons. Jackson said she was “definitely open to it” and that “we’ll see what happens.”

Reilly said she didn’t have an answer about returning, but that she was “happy” about the passage of the 5-for-5. If Nebraska gets just one of the big three: Jackson, Murray, or Reilly back for a fifth season, that would be huge.
