There are a few targets left on the board for Nebraska football in the 2027 recruiting class, with two decisions looming on July 6th.

One of those targets is four-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor. A 5-foot-11, 190-pound wide receiver, out of Pennsylvania. Things are trending in the right direction as insiders are expressing more confidence in the Huskers’ ability to land him.

However, another target deciding next week, three-star cornerback Kamuari Whitefield, also has an announcement scheduled for July 6th, but according to Tim Verghese of Inside Nebraska, this won’t work out in Nebraska’s favor.

Nebraska football target trending away

The Nebraska recruiting insider has projected Whitfield to commit to the Florida Gators next week, joining an expert prediction from Steve Wiltfong of Rivals at the end of last month.

That gives Florida a 98-percent chance to land the commitment of Whitfield, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound cornerback ranked No. 785 overall according to Rivals. Nebraska football hosted him for an official visit. There were reports that the Huskers made a strong NIL offer, but it appears as though Florida has at least matched it.

Whitfield would have been a perfect fit in the slot/nickel role for the 4-2-5 defense under Rob Aurich. He would have been great to pair with all the four-star commitments in the secondary. Nebraska football has four-star recruits Tory Pittman and Corey Hadley committed at safety, each ranking in the top 128 overall, as well as four-star cornerbacks Bryce Williams Jailen Hill.

Whitfield would have been the cherry on top, giving Nebraska essentially one player for each starting position to develop for the future. It didn’t work out and that’s fine. The 21-man recruiting class is still solid, and it will be even better if Taylor is added next week, or even sooner.

That would give the Huskers 22 commitments and 10 blue-chips, with five ranking in the top 128.
