Nebraska basketball added its sixth transfer portal commitment on Thursday, landing former South Dakota State big man Damon Wilkinson after a visit earlier this week.

After the departure of Ugnius Jarusevicius, Nebraska has a big void to fill in the frontcourt. It wasn’t necessarily in the starting lineup, although it wouldn’t be shocking if Wilkinson ended up in the starting lineup.

Boden Kapke was the projected starter in the eyes of many before this addition. He still could be. Like Wilkinson, he was a part-time starter for Boston College last season, so both players are accustomed to sharing a role, something they will do once again this season.

Who will be the starting bigs for Nebraska basketball?

The addition of Wilkinson fills a big need because outside of Kapke, Nebraska didn’t a proven low-post scorer. Sam Orme is a skilled scorer, but he’s not a dedicated a back-to-the-basket kind of guy. Wilkinson is and was highly proficient last season, shooting 59 percent on twos. He also earned 4.7 free throw attempts per game. Nobody on the Nebraska roster earned more than 2.4 (Braden Frager).

Despite just one 3-point attempt last season, Wilkinson shot 72 percent from the free-throw line, so maybe Fred Hoiberg can turn him into a pick-and-pop shooter. Either way, the Huskers landed a player getting interest from North Carolina State and others.

Wilkinson entered the portal less than a week ago. The Huskers landed a hot commodity, one who can be part of the program for multiple seasons and scored in double figures 27 times in 32 games last season. It sounds like players who currently have eligibility will be able to follow the old rules or the new rules in terms of a fifth year. So Wilkinson could have three seasons to play. Kapke could have two.

With Trevan Leonhardt and Taj DeDourville in the backcourt, along with Cale Jacobsen, Pryce Sandfort, Braden Frager, Colin Rice and Jacob Lanier, the Huskers have more than enough depth and talent at positions 1-3.

Now, with Sam Orme, Curtis, Kapke, Wilkinson, and Kadyn Betts, Nebraska has more than enough depth at the 4/5 spots, too. There are solid starting options everywhere, and after adding another bucket in the low post, Hoiberg’s offense might be the best in the Big Ten next season.
