Husker Big Red Daily: Fred Hoiberg likes his team, Nebraska football recruiting buzz, more

Nebraska basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg met with the media on Monday, discussing the offseason for the Huskers, as well as some of the new additions.

It was clear that Hoiberg is excited about this team. He said he wanted to hear the team be more vocal in practice, it “wasn’t as loud” as it was last season. Boden Kapke, the Boston College big man, who continues to sound like a steal for the Huskers, earned plenty of praise from Hoiberg as one of the top leaders on the team, despite being a newcomer.

Hoiberg also dropped an interesting nugget about the offense. He said it will be “more random” this season, meaning there probably won’t be as many set plays called. Hoiberg said he only called a few during Nebraska’s most recent scrimmage.

In addition to Kapke, Hoiberg talked about Sam Orme, the transfer expected to be Nebraska’s four-man. He connected on five triples in the scrimmage, says the Nebraska basketball head coach. Trevan Leonhardt was also credited for being an “elite passer.”

Hoiberg also said Kapke has had days making four or five 3-pointers. Another interesting note was that Hoiberg said he wants Braden Frager, the Big Ten’s Sixth Man of the Year, to be more of a two-way player. Frager, who also spoke to the media, said he wants to focus on being more “locked in” and not allowing his offense to dictate what happens on defense.

Latest Nebraska football recruiting buzz

As far as the 2027 class, maybe the only real note recently is that four-star QB Brady Edmunds reaffirmed his commitment to Ohio State. There was some concern about Ohio State trying to flip Trae Taylor at one point.

However, the Buckeyes’ current QB commitment sounds solid. Ohio State isn’t really expected to take two quarterbacks, so it looks like Ohio State will have to settle for Edwards, while Nebraska football signs the top-ranked QB in 2027.

Speaking of Ohio, Nebraska football extended an offer to Ohio offensive tackle Carson Adkins recently. The 6-foot-6, 305-pound tackle has been blowing up lately, with offers from Indiana, Tennessee, and Nebraska this month. Penn State, Kentucky, Northwestern, and Wisconsin have each offered since May.

This is the second offensive tackle Geep Wade has offered from Ohio in the 2028 class. Adkins doesn’t have an Ohio State offer yet, and he told Bryan Munson of Husker Online that he was “really excited” about the Nebraska offer. He also said the Huskers like the way he “finishes blocks.”

Nebraska odds and ends

Jordy Frahm received the Honda Award on Monday for being the best player in women’s college softball. She has joined the Nebraska softball team as an assistant coach. She’s expecting her first child, too.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will play an exhibition game against Kansas State in Grand Island on October 26th at the BigIron Events Center.

“We have a lot of fans in central Nebraska and are excited to bring the Huskers to Grand Island,” Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg said. “With a third exhibition game, it provides us an opportunity to build our brand across the state, and we appreciate Head Coach Casey Alexander and the Wildcats for making this matchup happen. We have had a lot of great matchups with K-State over the years, including last year’s Hall of Fame Classic, and it should be a tremendous environment.”

Also, in case you missed it, Nebraska football was predicted to finish 11th in the annual Cleveland.com Big Ten Media preseason poll. Big Ten Media Days start Tuesday. Nebraska football will speak on Thursday.
