Husker Big Red Daily: Takeaways from Nebraska volleyball domination, Huskers in NFL

Nebraska fans love seeing the Huskers beat Texas. On Sunday in Las Vegas, Nebraska volleyball didn’t just beat the Horns; they dominated them in a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-16).

It was the second straight sweep to open the season at the Players Era Challenge in Las Vegas. Nebraska volleyball also went 2-0 at Spikes Under The Lights, but those were exhibition matches.

Things counted for real this weekend. The Huskers, as expected, were nearly flawless. The offense could have been better on Sunday, but Nebraska hit .291. Texas was held to .152. Andi Jackson had nine kills and two blocks (.572).  Manaia Ogbechie added seven kills and seven blocks. Bergen Reilly was elite, as always, with 30 assists, five digs, and two aces.

Looking back at the sweep, as well as the 2-0 start, here are three takeaways.

Nebraska volleyball takeaways from sweep over Texas

• Nebraska beat Texas with its B-game. Harper Murray hit under .100. Some young players stepped up. Andi Jackson was incredible, and it didn’t matter. Texas didn’t feel like the No. 2 team. Nebraska played like No. 1.
• Ogbechie is a force. Teyara Singler, too. She added seven kills. Rebekah Allick and Taylor Landfair graduated from last season’s team, but Ogbechie had seven blocks. She hit .308. So far, there hasn’t been any drop-off.
• The defense is college volleyball’s best, or will be. Texas hit .152. UNLV hit .054. This team is on another level, just like it was last season. It just needs to stay healthy and focus on being its best in December.

Nebraska football players in the NFL

It was cutdown day in the NFL. There were mixed results for Nebraska football alums. Emmett Johnson made the cut with the Chiefs. Another Huskers running back, Ameer Abdullah, earned his way onto the Jaguars’ 53-man roster, giving him another season in the NFL.

Thomas Fidone is back on the Giants’ 53-man roster, while Cam Jurgens and Ty Robinson each made the 53-man roster in Philly without any drama. Both will play big roles this season. Maliek Collins made it with the Browns. Luke Gifford (49ers) and Cam Taylor-Britt (Colts) made it, too.

Among the players cut were Nash Hutmacher, Henry Lutovsky, Javin Wright, DeShone Singleton, Quinton Newsome, Adrian Martinez, Isaiah Neyor, John Bullock, Dane Key, Dasan McCullough, and Dicaprio Bootle.

Other moves could still happen. These Nebraska football players could be added to other rosters, too, via waivers, or some could be added to the practice squad.

Game Week

The Huskers open the season Saturday against the Ohio Bobcats (FSI, 11 AM CST). Nebraska football is listed as a 23.5-point favorite. We are predicting an 8-4 season. The first depth chart will be released Monday.
