The fear of Nebraska football losing defensive coordinator Tony White could become a reality.
One of the bright spots in the first season for Matt Rhule as Nebraska football head coach was the success of the defense under defensive coordinator Tony White.
Nebraska ranked 17th in college football in scoring defense this season under White after allowing just 18.2 points per game. Only two teams scored more than 30 points on the Huskers this season and the run defense was exceptional, averaging just 3.0 yards per carry allowed, as well as just 92 yards per game.
The Huskers were also third in the Big Ten in sacks (32) and White deserves a lot of credit for that. Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher were outstanding this season, but White did a great job of getting the most of the talent on the roster.
Yet, there’s a question about White returning because San Diego State is interested in him as their next head coach after the retirement of Brady Hoke.
As a former assistant coach with San Diego State, White would make sense and according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, he’s one of four candidates that has been interviewed along with Washington offensive coordinator Ben Grubbs, UNLV offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, and former Navy head coach Ken Niumatololo.
White was the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator from 2009-2017, so the Aztecs are very familiar with White. San Diego State has also talked about hiring a defensive-minded coach. White is that.
There has also been talk of USC trying to come after White, but it seems like the Huskers would be able to pay him enough to keep him from another college coordinator job.
A head-coaching job is another thing. Rhule even said that programs should want to hire White. If it happens, good luck to him. Obviously, it’s not great for Nebraska but, it’s part of having a good coaching staff.
Certainly, I’d love for the Huskers to have White for at least one more season. But if the interview with the Aztecs went well, Matt Rhule might need to find a new defensive coordinator, as well as a transfer quarterback.
