Welcome to the Big Red Rundown, your daily stop for the latest Nebraska football news, recruiting buzz, transfer portal updates, and Huskers headlines. Here’s a quick look at the latest storylines surrounding Nebraska athletics.
The Nebraska softball team had the first game of its Super Regional against Oklahoma State delayed due to weather. It will be resumed on Friday.
Nebraska and Oklahoma State didn’t even make it through a single inning before the rain came out. The field was covered with the tarp, but after a decision was made to restart the game, it was then postponed until Friday.
Jordy Frahm got through the first inning scoreless. She also opened the game with a single, which is why Nebraska softball has a runner on first base. Frahm will get the ball in the circle against Omaha native Ruby Meylan.
The first pitch will go out at 4 PM CST on ESPN. Game 2 will be on Saturday at 4 PM CST on ESPN. If third game is necessary, the date and time is to be determined.
Nebraska football stays hot on recruiting trail
Nebraska has picked up some momentum on the recruiting trail thanks to Geep Wade, who went into the state of Georgia and picked up top-100 offensive lineman Jordan Agbanoma on Wednesday, followed by the pledge of three-star KD Jones on Thursday.
Jones is ranked No. 605 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. The future starting center for Nebraska football, if all goes according to plan, is 6-foot-5, 303 pounds. He spent last season playing tackle for Grayson High School, showing great movement skills and really solid footwork. He’s probably better suited inside, which is where Geep Wade is projecting him.
But this feels like a four-star prospect masked as a three-star. Nebraska football has three O-line commitments, with Matt Erickson also in the fold. It feels like there is another spot, maybe for Timi Aliu. Rivals gives Nebraska an 83 percent chance to land the commitment of the four-star offensive tackle.
That would be the cherry on top in terms of O-line recruiting for Nebraska football in the 2027 class.
Nebraska baseball opens Big Ten Tournament
After earning a bye into the quarterfinals, Will Bolt’s squad will open its defense of the Big Ten Tournament championship on Friday night against seventh-seeded Michigan.
Carson Jasa is expected to start for Nebraska. The starter is still up in the air for the Wolverines, who have won two of three games so far. Michigan beat Rutgers on Tuesday, followed that up with a loss to Washington, then got a second complete-game shutout from a starter in three days to beat Ohio State 3-0.
Jasa is 9-2 with a 3.58 ERA. Nebraska has already won 40 games this season for just the ninth time in school history. Nebraska will be led by the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Dylan Carey, who also hit .347 this season with 14 home runs and 63 RBI on his way to All-Big Ten honors.
Drew Grego was also a pleasant surprise this season for Nebraska, winning the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award. Grego hit .348 this season with seven homers and 44 RBI. He was also tied for fourth on the team with 12 doubles, including three, a school record, in a recent win over Creighton.
The Big Ten Tournament is single elimination from here on out. Nebraska, if it wins, would play either Oregon or Washington on Saturday for a berth in a third straight Big Ten title game. Nebraska has won nine in a row in the Big Ten Tournament.
The Huskers are currently projected as a No. 13 overall seed by D1 Baseball. That means Nebraska would host a regional in the opening round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
