Husker Big Red Daily: Matt Rhule wants more from O-line, Jamal Rule honored by Big Ten, more

Nebraska football is 1-0 following an impressive win over Ohio on Saturday. We have looked at it from every angle with takeaways, grades and overreactions, as well as things that we learned.

Matt Rhule talked about the win Monday, with the benefit of evaluating the film. The head coach pointed out some things that need to improve. One area that needs to be better, he said, is the offensive line.

“They played well. They asserted their physicality in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly good enough,” Rhule said. “It wasn’t nearly good enough for what they can be. It was good enough to win that game, and it was good enough to score 49 points …At the same time, there are too many techniques that Geep Wade has taught that didn’t show up on the (game) tape, stuff that we’ve done every day. Too many guys were being a little too quick.”

There were some missed assignments, especially in the first half. The offensive line did a better job in the second half, and the Huskers responded with five consecutive scoring drives. Ohio also isn’t a Big Ten defense, so it’s good to hold the offensive line to a high standard, because it’s one they will need to meet in conference play.

Jamal Rule named Big Ten Freshman back of the Week

Thanks to his 169-yard effort, which included 122 yards on the ground, Jamal Rule, the Nebraska football running back, earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.

The true freshman caught two passes for 47 yards. He had a long runs of 39 yards, and looks like he could be a star for the Huskers, although it was just one game.

Nebraska football depth chart released for Bowling Green

The depth chart didn’t really change. Isaiah Mozee, Mekhi Nelson, and Rule are all listed as the starting running backs. The biggest change is that Mac Markway, the former tight end, is on the depth chart at defensive end.

Matt Rhule said he will have a role to play, so expect to see him on the field in the next two weeks, which will be absolutely incredible, after he suffered not one, but two season-ending injuries already in his college career.

“Mac Markway, coming off of three torn ACLs and been here for two years, hasn’t played,” Rhule said. “His role will, I think, significantly be amplified each week. I think you’ll see him continue to move forward.”

Rhule also said the same thing about Demitrius Bell, who saw the fifth-most snaps among wide receivers during the Ohio game.
