It’s never too early to think about quarterbacks in college football recruiting. Nebraska football has learned that lesson both ways.

Waiting too long can make things difficult, while securing an early commitment from a highly-touted quarterback can set a class up for success, sort of like Trae Taylor for Nebraska in 2027.

Outside of Taylor, QB recruiting has been a little up and down for Nebraska. TJ Lateef was a solid get after Dylan Raiola, but the 2026 class was a disaster, as the Huskers ignored Jett Thomalla, an Alabama signee, because they had Dayton Raiola committed, who ended up basically walking on at Oregon to play tight end.

That’s a recruiting mistake no matter how you slice it.

New 2028 QB offer to pay attention to for Nebraska football

Nebraska football could help rectify it with another solid addition in the 2028 class. With Taylor expected to be entrenched as the long-term starter, it might not be an easy sell. Nebraska football is doing its best, though, with 11 offers total going out to 2028 quarterbacks, including an offer to three-star Owen Herrick on Thursday.

Herrick’s recruitment is starting to pick up. He’s got 10 offers total. Five of them have come in the past three weeks from Illinois, Nebraska, Ole Miss, and Arkansas. Minnesota also offered the 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback out of Pittsburgh, who is ranked No. 358 overall in the 2028 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s 25th among quarterbacks.

This feels like a recruitment Nebraska has the chance to win. The Huskers haven’t really established themselves as the favorite with any other 2028 quarterbacks, so this is a recruitment to watch moving forward.
