Nebraska football has to get four more wins for bowl eligibility, but one ESPN reporter believes the Huskers will achieve it.
The prospects of Nebraska football reaching a bowl game are probably about 50/50 right now. Nebraska is 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten.
The Huskers need six wins. We all know that after suffering through the longest bowl drought in the FBS. But can Nebraska actually get to that point?
ESPN is projecting that the Huskers will make the Quick Lane Bowl. At least one of the two reporters (Mark Schlabach) that projects bowls for the network.
Nebraska is going to need to win four of seven games and those are all conference games. The road game against Illinois on Friday will be a big test.
You don’t want to be 2-4. Northwestern and Purdue are the next two home games, plus a closing stretch at Michigan State, as well as home games against Iowa and Maryland, in addition to a road trip to Wisconsin.
If Nebraska football can win against Illinois this week, it would greatly improve the Huskers’ chances of making a bowl game. Right now, Nebraska would need to sweep the four home games, which is possible.
Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa, and Maryland are all winnable games. But they aren’t gimmes. Purdue looked really good beating down Illinois last week 44-19. Northwestern has even shown life beating Minnesota. Iowa is Iowa and that will be a battle. Maryland, on the other hand, is 5-0.
So getting through the home schedule 4-0 is a tall order. After Illinois, just two road games remain: at Michigan State and at Wisconsin. Nebraska would need to win one and Friday night could be the best chance.
