MJ Morris had Nebraska football in his top three out of high school, but he’s a quarterback the Huskers should consider in the portal.
Outside of Tony White and the brief scare with USC hiring away the defensive coordinator, Nebraska football fans have been obsessed with transfer portal quarterbacks.
It makes sense when you look back at the 2023 season. If Nebraska football had landed a quality quarterback in the portal last offseason, the Huskers might be representing the Big Ten West tonight.
That’s not hyperbole either. Nebraska was 0-5 in games decided by seven points or less and in every one of those games, turnovers were the reason the Huskers lost.
Chubba Purdy had some quality moments. He also struggled too much against Wisconsin and made critical mistakes against Maryland and Iowa. I hope he’s around, but the Huskers need to at least add some competition.
Matt Rhule talked about how much adding a transfer portal quarterback can be. He also said he’d like a multi-year guy.
We’ll see if he sticks to that, but MJ Morris of North Carolina State is a recent entry that has me intrigued.
Why MJ Morris would make sense for Nebraska
Morris has only played nine career games. However, the four-star quarterback has 14 touchdowns in his career with North Carolina State and has flashed potential. He is completing just 57 percent of his passes, so some development will be needed, but the kid has talent. He’s also got four games with multiple touchdown passes in just nine overall.
Nebraska football was among his final top three as a high school recruit (4-star). Don’t get me wrong, Morris isn’t Will Howard or someone like that. He’s not a proven commodity or just a one-year dude.
He’s got three years of eligibility left and would provide real depth and competition for Purdy. Will Howard and Grayson McCall are probably my top options that seem realistic.
I’d love Cameron Ward but I have a hard time seeing Nebraska landing a guy that’s going to demand a ton of money in the transfer portal. We’ll see. Even Howard and McCall are going to be tough to land.
That’s why Morris is a name to watch. He doesn’t have the experience Nebraska might want, but he’s got 14 touchdowns in 199 career attempts. Chubba Purdy has six in 164, so even if Morris just produced at the level he did at NC State, he would be a big upgrade.
Morris can run a little but he doesn’t run as well as Chubba, which is something to keep in mind. But if some of the bigger names are off the board, and Rhule wants a multi-year guy, Nebraska football could do a lot worse.
