Nebraska football needed a quality punter and landed one of the best in the Big Ten last season.

Nebraska football is in the mix for some of the biggest names in the transfer portal. But the Huskers are also landing commitments and filling some major needs.

Over the weekend, Nebraska football landed its second transfer portal commitment. It was from New Hampshire long-snapper, Kevin Gallic.

The Huskers need help on the offensive line, defensive line, wide receiver, now running back, EDGE, cornerback, and other positions. They also needed a long snapper because the work last season at that position wasn’t good enough.

And after Brian Bushini exhausted his eligibility, Nebraska will need a new punter. Husker fans know what a weapon a great punter can be, and also what a liability a poor one can be.

So, Nebraska fans should feel good about the addition of Jack McCallister, the former Washington punter, who committed on Tuesday.

McCallister averaged 44 yards per attempt this season. He had 12 punts inside the 20 on the season. He’s got 32 for his career along with 31 fair catches. That means that 60.5 percent of his punts have been downed inside the 20 or fair caught. He also had just two touchbacks this season and six for his career.

Nebraska football has added two transfers on the defensive line, a punter, and a long-snapper. The special teams guys aren’t sexy but if you watched the Huskers last season, you’ll know they were necessary moves. It was smart of Matt Rhule to prioritize them, and make those additions, while the focus is elsewhere.

The Huskers still did work with the elite guys. Williams Nwaneri is one of the top-ranked commitments in the portal. They are also a finalist for offensive tackle Isaiah World, who has a hefty price tag. It’s not all going to work out, but Nebraska is being aggressive and I like that.

Nebraska football to host an offensive tackle transfer

The Huskers hosted World earlier this week. He would be a plug-and-play guy at left tackle. However, he’s not the only offensive tackle they are interested in.

Oregon and Texas A&M are also contenders for World so that might not be realistic. Keagen Trost is another offensive line target who played over 700 snaps last season for Wake Forest.

Trost entered the portal on Tuesday and he’s already scheduled a visit to Nebraska this weekend after getting an offer. Other programs are interested and that’s not surprising. Trost should be a top priority. The Huskers need another offensive tackle, maybe two, and Trost would be a great fit.
