Nebraska football has put together an impressive haul in the secondary in the 2027 class, but the Huskers still aren’t satisfied.

Three-star cornerback Kamauri Whitfield is probably the last defensive back on the board for Nebraska football, which has 21 commitments in 2027, following the pledge of three-star Barrett Kitrell on Monday.

Nine of those are blue-chip prospects. Four of those blue chips are committed in the secondary, along with three-star safety Brennan Drummond, who committed to Nebraska on Sunday.

That made you wonder if Nebraska was still going to land Whitfield. He just visited Florida, after an official visit to Nebraska football, yet, with a decision looming on July 6th, there are reasons for Nebraska football fans to be confident.

According to a report from Tim Verghese of Rivals, Nebraska has a strong NIL offer in play to land the 5-foot-10, 185-pound cornerback out of Orlando.

Addison Williams has been an ace recruiter. He is responsible for landing four of the nine blue-chip commitments in 2027, and he has won plenty of recruitments in Florida, such as with Danny Odem, a five-star corner in 2026.

Nebraska could land missing piece in secondary for 2027

Whitfield would be a missing piece of sorts. Rob Aurich’s defense is based on the 4-2-5. That’s nothing new. Most teams play most of their snaps in nickel or a sub-package defense, so having a quality nickel back is essential.

That’s the role Nebraska football envisions for Whitfield. Florida and Oregon were the other teams listed as “warm” by 247 Sports, but the offer sheet is impressive, with 15 offers from Big Ten or SEC programs, as well as teams like Miami, Florida State, Baylor, Kansas State, Iowa State, and more.

It feels like there is confidence on the Nebraska side of things. It would be the 22nd commitment in the 2027 class. Khalil Taylor, the four-star wideout who just visited, is also a possibility. Fans are holding out hope for five-star recruits Ahmad Hudson and Albert Simien, but that seems less likely.

Florida still leads according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine; however, those predictions could be updated soon if the Huskers are able to turn their current momentum into a commitment.
