Husker Big Red Daily: Nebraska impresses 2028 QB, Danny Odem shines, volleyball’s perfect homestand

There were over 30 recruits from different classes on the scene for the Nebraska football win over Bowling Green. The atmosphere was electric — so was the play on the field.

Nebraska rolled up 56 points, scored seven touchdowns on offense, one on defense, blocked a punt, and allowed fewer than 200 total yards, while finishing with over 500.

The offensive numbers are impressive: Nebraska is scoring 52.5 points per game. There wasn’t a single punt against Bowling Green, and the Huskers are rushing for 256 yards per game.

Yes, it has been against MAC teams, but still. On the recruiting trail, that production has to open the eyes of 2028 quarterback Owen Herrick, who visited for the game. He seems like the top target in 2028 at QB, now out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Herrick is ranked No. 419 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s 6-foot-2, 185 pounds. Herrick said he “felt the love” and came away “very impressed,” according to Bryan Munson of Husker Online.

There haven’t been any expert projections yet, but keep an eye out for some. It feels like there is a decent chance of Herrick being Nebraska’s 2028 QB commitment.

Danny Odem pushing for a starting job

The five-star freshman played more snaps as the No. 2 cornerback than Jeremiah Charles (6) or Victor Evans (21), who started the game. Odem played (26) and didn’t allow a single reception. He had the third-best coverage grade, according to Pro Football Focus. 

Odem is an elite man-coverage corner. If he’s ready, the trio of Odem, Andrew Marshall, and Donovan Jones could be lights out. Freshman defensive tackle Dylan Berymon played four snaps, too, and was graded as one of the better run defenders, although in limited action.

Nebraska volleyball improves to 7-0

After a win over New Mexico on Thursday, Nebraska volleyball beat 20th-ranked Baylor on Friday, before winning a four-set match against Georgia Tech on Saturday.

The Huskers have played 26 sets total this season if you include the Spikes Under the Lights. They have won 25 of them. Creighton is up next for a team that has played a lot and traveled a lot so far this season.

One reason the Huskers haven’t skipped a beat this season is the defense. Nebraska leads college volleyball with an opponent hitting percentage of .062. The Huskers are fourth in hitting at .335.

Defense wins championships, but an electric offense pays, too.
