Nebraska football fans got some really good news on Tuesday, but they just might not know it.

The NCAA formally adopted the 5-for-5 college eligibility proposal, which will be a drastic change, one that could really help the Nebraska football program and other programs, too.

How will will help the Huskers

Essentially, it means that players will have five years to play five seasons. For the first time, college athletes will be able to participate in five seasons in the NCAA. So any rising senior this season, who hasn’t taken a redshirt year, would be eligible for another season of college, namely, Anthony Colandrea.

The expected Nebraska football starting quarterback can now play two seasons in Lincoln. That would be a blessing, allowing the Huskers to bring along Trae Taylor at the right pace, instead of forcing him on the field too early, which is what happened with Dylan Raiola. There wasn’t another viable option.

Nebraska won’t have that issue next season. Brendan Black, who started as a true freshman, just like Colandrea, is another player who will be eligible for an extra season. Cameron Lenhardt is another player who comes to mind on the defensive front.

This rule could be even more valuable for Nebraska volleyball head coach Dani Busboom-Kelly because it would allow Harper Murray, Andi Jackson, and Bergen Reilly an extra year to play for the Huskers, if they choose. So the 2026 season doesn’t have to be their swan song.

It will have a huge impact on every program, but for a Nebraska football program that has needed to get older, this will only help, especially if it means two seasons of Anthony Colandrea.

The latest Nebraska football recruiting buzz

There are essentially four targets on the board in the 2027 class for the Huskers: Wide receiver Khalil Taylor, offensive lineman Albert Simien, tight end Ahmad Hudson, and nickel cornerback Kamauri Whitfield.

Simien will announce a decision on Friday. Nebraska football fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. The five-star offensive lineman seems headed to Texas A&M. There is real buzz about Hudson potentially flipping. Nebraska insider Bryan Munson gives it about a 30-percent chance in a recent report.

However, there seems to be a 50/50 chance for the Huskers with Whitfield, a three-star corner from Orlando, and Taylor, the top-100 wideout from Pennsylvania, who has been viewed as a Penn State lean.

Nebraska made a move with a 5-foot-11, 180-pound wideout over the weekend on his official visit. He said it was his “best” visit. It’s hard to say if the Huskers did enough with Taylor and Whitfield, who is also considering Florida, but these are two head-to-head recruitments to watch.

Whitfield will announce on July 6th, the same day as Taylor.
