It’s too early to start worrying about the Nebraska basketball team but after watching the Huskers struggle to a 63-58 win over Bethune-Cookman, it’s fair to be a little concerned.
Even though Bethune-Cookman was ranked outside the top 300 in the Kenpom rankings and Nebraska basketball was a 25-point favorite, the Huskers only scored 63 points. The Huskers shot 35 percent from the field, 18 percent from 3-point range (4-of-22), and just two players — Brice Williams and Juwan Gary reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Nebraska forced 22 turnovers on defense, but gave it up 18 times. The Huskers also allowed 11 offensive rebounds and nine 3-pointers. For the second straight game, Nebraska won at the free throw line. They had 35 attempts (25 makes) in the season opener and followed it up with a 21-of-26 effort Saturday.
Still, the Huskers have dropped 12 spots in the Kenpom rankings after their first two games (69th), which tells you they weren’t up to snuff. Wins are better than losses, but Fred Hoiberg’s news team isn’t quite gelling.
Nebraska volleyball sweeps again
The Nebraska volleyball team continued their dominance in Big Ten play with another three-set sweep, this time over Washington on Saturday by the scores of 25-17, 25-11, 25-21.
Harper Murray had 12 kills and hit .361 to lead the way for the Huskers who won their 21st straight match. Taylor Landfair continued to come on strong with 10 kills (.471) while Andi Jackson had seven kills (.333) and three blocks.
Bergen Reilly did her thing with 34 assists but also added a career-high five kills, two blocks, and two aces. Rebekah Allick added five kills and three blocks, while Lexi Rodriguez managed 11 digs and two aces.
Nebraska volleyball is now 14-0 in Big Ten play. In their last nine matches, the Huskers have dropped one set. They have dropped four sets total in Big Ten play and just 11 this season. Nebraska has also beaten nine ranked teams and can add to that total against Minnesota on Thursday night in Lincon (BTN).
Nebraska women’s basketball team improves to 2-0
Without Britt Prince, the Nebraska women’s basketball team had its hands full with Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday and even trailed by three going into the fourth quarter.
Yet, the Huskers outscored the Lions 24-11 over the final 10 minutes to win 78-68. Natalie Potts, the Big Ten freshman of the Year last season, poured in 17 points for Nebraska including a 4-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Alberte Rimdal who started for Prince, also had a stellar day, knocking down three triples to finish with 14 points. Logan Nissley also connected on four treys coming off the bench to finish with 14 points.
Petra Bozan, another freshman Nebraska basketball fans need to know, scored 11 off the bench in 13 minutes. She was 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from deep as the Huskers improved to 2-0.
