Nebraska football will know its fate with elite 2027 quarterback Trae Taylor sooner than expected. The four-star quarterback who was expected to announce in June has moved up his commitment date, according to Greg Smith of Rivals.
Taylor will now announce on May 1st. Nebraska football is a finalist for Taylor. He also visited the Huskers not long ago during spring practices. Michigan, Texas A&M, Illinois, Notre Dame, Alabama, and Auburn are other teams in the mix. They were either listed as finalists or have gotten spring visits.
Taylor visited all of the schools listed this spring. His last three visits were to Michigan, Nebraska, and A&M. There were positive vibes on his last visit, but Nebraska football offered another 2027 quarterback, Keegan Croucher, soon after, so it’s hard to get a read on this recruitment. There haven’t been any crystal balls or expert predictions for the On3 recruiting prediction machine yet.
Those should be coming soon. The Huskers feel like they have a good shot, but it’s anyone’s guess right now where they stand, although that clarity will come soon enough. Michigan leads according to the On3 prediction machine. Taylor is ranked No. 105 overall in the 2027 class according to the On3 Industry rankings.
In-state target cancels Nebraska football visit
In other Nebraska football recruiting news, Isaac Jensen, one of the top in-state players in the 2026 class, has canceled his official visit to the Huskers and will see Florida State instead, according to Greg Smith.
The Huskers were projected to land Jensen, so this is a bit of a surprise. It doesn’t necessarily mean they are out of the running for his commitment, but it’s not a great sign. He will visit Missouri, Texas A&M, Iowa State, and Florida State. Jensen has visited Nebraska football numerous times so it’s not like that is necessary.
But Florida State is trending up and just beat out the Huskers for Chase Loftin in the 2025 class, so it feels less than ideal for Nebraska football recruiting.
Gavin Griffiths is in the transfer portal
Many Nebraska fans, myself included, had high hopes for Gavin Griffiths, a former top-50 overall recruit in basketball, but it just didn’t work out. Griffiths played in 16 games this season, with an average of just 8.4 minutes, 2.1 points, and 1.6 rebounds last season for the Huskers.
The 6-foot-7 sophomore just never made his way into the Nebraska basketball rotation. The Huskers also didn’t play him for a single minute in The Crown.Â
Outside of Griffiths, Nebraska basketball hasn’t lost any players to the transfer portal. The scholarship limits could also be different, so the old 13-man limit might not be relevant anymore. Teams could have up to 15 players on full or partial scholarships.
That’s good news for someone like Cale Jacobsen. But Griffiths needed a change of scenery. That seemed best for both sides.
