Husker Big Red Daily: Isaiah Mozee eyes starting RB job, new 2028 offers for Nebraska, more

One of the hottest topics recently surrounding Nebraska football is who will be the starting running back?

The arrest of Mekhi Nelson and the addition of former Penn State running back Tikey Hayes, who was going to play at Iowa Western this season, have made things even more complicated.

However, maybe there is a simple solution that has been staring Nebraska in the face all along: Isaiah Mozee.

The former four-star wide receiver turned running back carried the ball 26 times last season for 115 yards. He also caught 14 passes for 155 yards, giving him 270 yards on 40 touches (6.7 yards per touch).

Mozee sort of looked like a wide receiver playing running back last season (195 pounds). This year, that won’t be the case. He’s listed at 6-foot, 210 pounds, but revealed in a recent interview that he’s up to 215 pounds, and determined to be a better runner between the tackles.

Throw in pass protection — if he can excel there — and it might be difficult for Jamal Rule or Hayes to unseat Mozee if Nelson is dealing with a suspension to start the season.

New 2028 Nebraska football offers

The board keeps expanding in the 2028 recruiting class. One new name added on Wednesday was four-star offensive tackle Kavon Blackmon from Springfield, Ohio.

The 6-foot-6, 275-pounder is ranked No. 170 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s sixth in the state of Ohio. The Buckeyes just offered, too. Ohio State doesn’t offer every in-state kid, so that will be tough to overcome.

Ohio State is the leader according to the Rivals Prediction Machine with a 40 percent chance to keep the in-state recruit home. Louisville, Purdue, Colorado, and Michigan State are some of the other teams in the mix.

Nebraska football also offered four-star EDGE Javontae Eldridge out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. At 6-foot-1, 243 pounds, he’s ranked No. 307 in the 2028 class via the 247 Sports composite rankings. The Huskers haven’t had a strong foothold in Indiana, but the Hoosiers haven’t offered yet. Tennessee, Purdue, Rutgers, and Vanderbilt are some of the other top contenders.

Tennessee offered after a camp earlier this summer. Eldridge had seven sacks during his first two seasons in high school.
