Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule was out of the country, playing golf with his son when he found out that Trev Alberts was leaving for the AD Job at Nebraska for Texas A&M.

Rhule posted a video on X that summed up his thoughts about the future, especially as it relates to the 2024 Nebraska football season. That’s where the focus is right now. Rhule is very popular in Nebraska but won’t be if the Huskers have another losing season, this time with a five-star quarterback.

Matt Rhule addresses Trev Alberts’ departure

Still, it was interesting to hear Matt Rhule talk about Trev Alberts and the future of Nebraska football on Monday, a week before the start of spring practice.

The head coach had a lengthy opening statement but addressed the elephant in the room, saying, “It’s tough to lose someone of Trev (Alberts) caliber. He left the place better than he found it.”

Rhule also said he didn’t just lose a boss, but also a friend in Trev Alberts. At the same time, Rhule said that he’s all in on Nebraska football. He also threw his support behind interim athletic director Dennis LeBlanc. Rhule said he was perfect for this role.

While there are difficult times, Rhule said this is a tremendous opportunity for the state of Nebraska and Cornhuskers athletics. As Tom Osborne said last week, Nebraska needs people that want to be here and the Nebraska football program certainly has that in Matt Rhule.

The head coach talked about the women’s basketball team, and wrestling, gushed about men’s basketball, and how much his daughters have enjoyed cheering on Nebraska’s female athletes. He even said his son is attending the University of Lincoln, starting this week, and his wife is opening a business.

“I wouldn’t send my son here if we didn’t believe in this University,” he said. The second-year head coach said he was “all in” more than once. So don’t worry about his commitment.

Yet, Rhule talked about needing to make the proper investments to win nowadays in college football. He said he’s going to visit Georgia to see how they do things and stressed the importance of “retaining talented people” meaning players, admins, whatever.

Just because Trev Alberts left doesn’t mean the sky is falling and as long as Matt Rhule is around, Nebraska football at least, is in a good place.
