It only took one day for the University of Nebraska to replace Trev Alberts, at least on an interim basis as Dennis Leblanc, a 40-year veteran of Nebraska athletics has been appointed as the interim athletic director.

Leblanc isn’t a well-known name, but the interim hire didn’t need to be about winning the press conference or grabbing headlines. Nebraska needs a stabilizing presence and someone to get the Huskers through the coming months which will include the rest of winter sports, spring, and probably the fall.

The interim president, Chris Kabourek announced the move. He also announced that he’ll conduct a national search for an athletic director, but it’s hard to believe they’ll find a top-flight AD without hiring a president first.

For all the anger directed at Trev Alberts, which is justified in my opinion, Nebraska has gone without a president for seven months. That needs to be resolved. For now though, Leblanc is taking over and that’s a good thing, even though this entire situation is a nightmare.

“Dennis loves Nebraska, he cares deeply about the young women and men in our program, and he has a proven record of supporting their academic success,” Kabourek said. “Dennis and I are completely aligned on our vision for Nebraska to compete at the highest levels on the field, on the court and in the classroom. He will provide exactly the steady hand and trusted voice that we need during this interim period. I am so grateful to Dennis and Coreen for answering this call to serve and I know Husker Athletics will be in exceptionally capable hands under his leadership.”

Trev Alberts also endorsed the move, re-posting the announcement on X, saying “Congratulations Dennis, this is the right move.”

Kenny Bell and Will Compton, two former Nebraska football greats, also endorsed the move. Bell said to “Give him the keys” while Compton called it an “incredible hire.”
