Nebraska football fans don’t want to give Matt Rhule credit for much, but the head coach deserves some credit for how well the 2027 recruiting class is coming together.
It felt like it was going to be a good weekend for the Huskers in terms of commitments. It’s the first big official visit weekend, and by mid-Saturday, Nebraska football has two new commitments that we know about.
Three-star defensive lineman Errol Demontagnac committed on Friday night. That was followed by the commitment of four-star cornerback Bryce Williams, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Demontagnac is ranked No. 855 according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Williams is ranked No. 312. There is a lot to like about both. Demontagnac had 86 tackles and 14 sacks last season. He’s also from Florida.
Williams has 26 pass breakups over the past two seasons, to go along with four interceptions. He’s a ballhawk. If Jailen Hill commits to Nebraska football as expected on Tuesday, that will be four blue-chip commitments in the secondary (Williams, Hill, Tory Pittman, Corey Hadley).
Nebraska seems poised to land another defensive lineman, Nehemiah Ombati, a three-star who is ranked No. 406 overall, just outside of four-star range. He’s 6-foot-3, 275 pounds. Demontagnac is 6-foot-3, 290.
Four-star wideout Matthew Gregory is also expected to commit relatively soon, along with three-star tight end Joey Hunter. Nebraska football is also hosting two five-star visitors, OL Albert Simien and tight end Ahmad Hudson.
Nebraska’s recruiting class is exceeding expectations
If the Huskers can close with those targets, add an EDGE rusher or two, then this class will be essentially complete. Getting into the top 10 will be hard. Regardless, it feels like this class is and will exceed expectations.
Trae Taylor has proven to be an elite peer recruiter. It seemed like he had a hand in getting Hudson back on campus, or was one of the reasons why, at least. The four-star quarterback, who should be ranked as a five-star recruit, is Matt Rhule’s crown jewel.
This class probably won’t be big enough to rank top 10 overall. Having a blue-chip percentage above 50 would be huge, especially when those premier players are at QB, RB, WR, OL, CB, S, and hopefully, DL. Nebraska is investing wisely in the premium positions, and it has paid off.
The Huskers’ 2027 class is ranked 24th right now. That’s with 13 commitments. The final number should be around 20. A top-20 ranking, or so, seems realistic, too.
What matters more than rankings is getting good players at key positions. It feels like Rhule’s staff has done a great job of that, especially considering four top-100 commitments, which would be five if Gregory commits.
If the Huskers could get Simien or Hudson, that would be six. It’s not quite Oregon and Ohio State, but this is the way Nebraska football should be recruiting, especially if that gap is ever going to close.
