Nebraska football came away with a big victory on Saturday, and one of the players that stepped up in that victory was tight end Thomas Fidone He made his presence felt, and was able to score a touchdown for the second game in a row. He made tight ends coach Josh Martin’s comments come true.  Martin indicated that Fidone was a player who could have a breakout game. He certainly did.

The tight end tallied four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. Several of his catches were impressive. There was one particular catch near the sideline that was able to keep a drive alive. It was off of a solid throw from quarterback Heinrich Haarberg, as well as a good in-bounds snag from Fidone.

Above all, Fidone’s last two games have been encouraging to see. He has been able to make a role for himself in the passing attack, and that has allowed him to become a target for Haarberg specifically. The two were able to connect up the seam in the second quarter, and that gave Nebraska a 14-3 lead following the extra point.

Fidone’s emergence encouraging for Nebraska football

It’s encouraging to see him play a high level and find the end zone. Now the question is, will he be able to keep it up? He certainly has the physical tools to do so.  During preseason, we weren’t sure what we were going to get from him, especially considering he hadn’t played football in a long time. So far, it seems like he hasn’t missed a beat.

Fidone’s overall emergence is encouraging for the Nebraska for the passing game. They are continuing to look for a reliable weapon in the passing game. He is becoming one. Just look at his yards per reception so far this year. He is averaging 9.2 yards per catch. The playmaking ability that was evident during his high school days is now showing up at the collegiate level. He is running routes, finding space, and using all of his six-foot-six, 250-pound frame to get open and make contested attached.

It will be interesting to see what he does for a follow-up act against Louisiana Tech next Saturday. As for now, it’s safe to say his stock is rising.
