There was some recruiting news to report on the Nebraska football front Sunday, as  Rivals.com’s Greg Smith put in a Futurecast for 2024 three-star athlete Caleb Benning. Benning is of course a legacy prospect, with his father Damon being a Husker legend.

Smith reported that a decision would be coming soon for Benning. The defense in particular has stood out for Benning, as noted in Smith’s report.

This would be a nice get for Nebraska football. Benning currently ranks as the 49th overall athlete in the 2024 class, and fifth overall player in his class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports rankings. Numerically, he is an 88 overall.

So far, he has two predictions from 247Sports experts. Husker247’s Michael Bruntz put in a medium confidence prediction on September 12.

Benning primarily played the safety position in high school. However, his speed and instincts make him a versatile threat.

What does this mean for Nebraska football?

The Omaha Westside product would join a 2024 class that already has a safety in Rex Guthrie. With that being said, he could certainly find his home in other areas on the field.

From the outset of his recruitment, it seemed like Benning and Nebraska football were a match made in heaven. The connection with his father, as well as the fact that he is a local kid made too much sense.

Nebraska football has a nice job of recruiting the state for the 2024 class. Dae’vonn Hall, Isaiah McMorris and Daniel Kaelin are some of the top players in the state. Generally speaking, this coaching staff has done a nice job of identifying their targets and getting them to commit.

Overall, this is good news for the program. Benning’s visit over the weekend, combined with the fact that he is set to make his decision apparently soon, makes this recruitment lean in Nebraska’s favor. Nothing is guaranteed in recruiting. However, several factors point to this recruitment as being one that will swing in Nebraska’s favor.
