Thursday ended on a down note for Nebraska Cornhuskers fans after watching the men’s basketball team fall to Maryland, however, Nebraska football got some good news on Thursday, and the Nebraska women’s basketball team got a signature win.

First things first, Fred Hoiberg’s team was unable to take a four-game winning streak and turn it into five. The defense let down Nebraska against Maryland in an 83-75 loss.

The Terps shot 58 percent from the field overall and 47 percent from 3-point range. At one point in the second half, Maryland led by 11. Nebraska trimmed the lead down to two points on separate occasions but just couldn’t stop the Maryland offense.

Juwan Gary scored 22 points in the win but had just two rebounds. He also didn’t have a block or a steal. Brice Williams reached 20 points for the fifth straight game but Nebraska still dropped to 6-8 in the Big Ten and 16-9 overall.

Next up are road games at Penn State (Sunday) followed by a trip to Northwestern next Wednesday. There are three home games and three road games. A 3-3 finish, plus a win in the Big Ten tournament might be needed to make the NCAA tournament and the next three games are all quad-1 opportunities.

Nebraska women’s basketball with a ranked win

After falling behind 17th-ranked Maryland by 11 points on the road Thursday night in the first quarter, the Nebraska women’s basketball team scored 73 points over the final three quarters to rout the Terps, 91-71.

It was the first win over a ranked opponent on the road in over a decade and it’s a signature win for Amy Williams, as well as this 2024-25 Nebraska women’s basketball team.

The Huskers (17-8, 8-6)  were listed by ESPN as among the last four teams out in the latest NCAA tournament projections. However, the 20-point win that featured 20 points and 11 boards from Alexis Markowski. Alberte Rimdal poured in 15 points off the bench. Britt Prince pitched in with 13 points, eight assists, and four rebounds.

Nebraska is currently tied for seventh in the Big Ten conference with four games left.

Nebraska football makes the top five for Trae Taylor

Nebraska football recruiting has started to pick back up again. The Huskers are aiming for some flips in the 2026 class, but in the 2027 recruiting class, the Huskers made the top five for Trae Taylor.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback isn’t ranked yet according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Yet, he’s highly touted — something you can see with the lists of finalists which also includes LSU, Illinois, and Texas A&M.

Taylor has become a top priority for the Nebraska football program and he said he’s expecting to make a commitment this spring or summer or in December.

Most quarterbacks — at least the good ones — are committed before their senior season so this is notable for the Huskers who feel like they are easily among the top two or three contenders, if not No. 1.
