Welcome to the Big Red Rundown, your daily stop for the latest Nebraska football news, recruiting buzz, transfer portal updates, and Huskers headlines. Here’s a quick look at the latest storylines surrounding Nebraska athletics.
The 2026 Nebraska football season is still over four months away, but we have new bowl projections from On3 following spring practices.
Nebraska football wrapped up spring ball back in March. There hasn’t been a ton of positive buzz about the Huskers, locally or nationally. Part of that has to do with the schedule.
The Huskers are also flying under the radar more, which doesn’t bother me at all. Brett McMurphy of On3 projections Nebraska football to the Music City Bowl against 2025 College Football Playoff semifinalist Ole Miss.
It feels like Nebraska would need to win at least seven games to reach the Music City bowl and with the 2026 schedule, which features three of the final eight playoff teams from last season, and six nine-win teams, that would be an achievement. At least progress.
Nebraska football aims to flip a Florida State commitment
The Huskers tried at the end of the 2026 recruiting class to flip some commitments from Florida State. It didn’t happen, but Nebraska football is at it again with 2027 four-star defensive back Mekhi Williams.
Williams is ranked No. 196 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. 247 Sports has him 107th in their own rankings. Nebraska football will host him for an official visit in June. He also visited the Huskers this spring. Wisconsin will get an official visit, too, along with LSU, which just offered this week.
Florida State is on the schedule, too. Addison Williams is the Huskers’ ace recruiter, though, so if Nebraska is going to pull off this flip, he would be the one to do it.
Nebraska softball hopes to keep the surge going at the Big Ten tournament
It’s been a historic season for Nebraska softball in more ways than one. They enter the postseason ranked No. 2 with a 43-6 overall record. The Huskers were 23-1 in Big Ten play.
Beyond that, Nebraska softball has won 32 of its last 33 games. Jordy Frahm is the best two-way player in the country, and might win Big Ten Pitcher and Player of the Year again (she should).
After winning the Big Ten regular-season title, the Huskers are aiming for the sweep this week by taking the Big Ten tournament. The quarterfinals start on Thursday at 12:30 CST against Michigan, a bubble team seeking a defining win to secure an at-large berth.
The game will be shown on the Big Ten Network. Regardless of what happens this week, Nebraska should host a Super Regional (top 8 seed). One outlet even had the Huskers projected as the No. 1 overall seed.
