Fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers should be on cloud nine after the Crown college basketball championship. It’s nothing close to the national title Houston or Florida will win tonight, but it’s still the first postseason title for Nebraska basketball in 29 years. There’s also some positive recruiting buzz for Nebraska football fans to be excited about.
Outside of The Crown, and a second transfer portal commitment in two days for the Nebraska basketball team on Saturday, one of the biggest news items of the weekend was the Friday scholarship offer to Darion Jones, the No. 2 ranked recruit in the state for the 2026 class.
Last week, we said the Huskers should offer Jones, and soon after, they did. Iowa also just offered recently, which might have given Matt Rhule’s staff the push it needed. Since the offer, Nebraska football has been trending with expert projections for the No. 473 overall prospect in 2026 according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Jones has picked up two crystal ball projections to commit to Nebraska football. He’s also trending with predictions for the On3 recruiting prediction machine, which gives the Huskers an 89-percent chance to win his commitment.
In other Nebraska football news, Matt Rhule announced on Saturday that Hardley Gilmore is no longer with the team, confirming some rumors that surfaced late last week. Rhule also said on Saturday that the offensive line has been one of the “highlights” of the spring.
Nebraska softball takes two of three from Iowa
The 20th-ranked Nebraska softball team notched another series win in the Big Ten thanks to a pair of wins over Iowa. The first came on Friday by the score of 12-0. Jordy Bahl grabbed the complete-game win after tossing five shutout innings and striking out eight. Bahl also belted a grand slam in the win.
On Saturday, Nebraska softball tied four school records in a dominant 12-1 win over the Hawkeyes. Nebraska hit six home runs, tying a record, which gives the Huskers 76 for the season, tying another record.
Samantha Bland also tied a program record with three long bombs in one game. The win was also the 18th-run rule win of the season, also tying a program record for Nebraska softball.
Iowa got some measure of revenge on Sunday with a 5-2 win. Bahl was credited with the loss. Nebraska softball is 28-10 on the season and 8-3 in the Big Ten.
