When looking back at the past week of Huskers athletics, it’s hard not to start with the efforts of the Nebraska softball team.
Jordy Frahm and company posted a 5-0 record out in California. The Huskers defeated two ranked teams, run-ruled one, and outscored their five opponents by a score of 45-3.
On Sunday, Nebraska softball defeated Seattle 9-0 and Cal 6-0. That followed an 8-2 win on Saturday on Texas A&M. Frahm got the win after striking out 10 and allowing just one run in five innings. She also belted a home run and had four RBI in the 8-2 triumph of a ranked Texas A&M squad.
That was one day after the Huskers run-ruled a ranked South Carolina team, 9-1. Nebraska softball also beat Hawaii 13-0. The Huskers are 11-4 overall and 6-4 against ranked teams.
Heading into conference play, which isn’t here yet, the Huskers have the kind of resume you would need to host a regional or even a super regional. They have already beaten a No. 1-ranked team twice.
Frahm is having another incredible season. She’s batting .390 and is tied for the team lead in home runs (6) and RBI (16) with UNLV transfer Jesse Farrell. Hannah Camenzind (.412) leads the team in batting average among players who have appeared in all 14 games. She’s also tied with Frahm for the team lead in doubles (5).
In the circle, Fraham has a 3-3 record but a 1.95 ERA in 11 appearances. She has five saves and 57 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.
Nebraska basketball bracketology after key wins
The Nebraska women’s basketball team was recently projected as one of the first four teams out of the field after a loss to Oregon last week. However, the Huskers rebounded with a 69-68 win over Washington on Sunday, thanks to a game-winning 3-pointer by Britt Prince with just seconds remaining on the clock.
It was the first quad-1 win of the season for the Huskers, who are 17-11 overall, but just 6-11 in the Big Ten. There is one last game against Rutgers at home, and it’s one that Nebraska women’s basketball has to win.
Nebraska likely needs to win a game or two in the Big Ten tournament, but it will be interesting to see how much the Washington win helps. The last update was before that win.
Nebraska men’s basketball bounced back with a win over Penn State on Saturday. That won’t move the needle much in terms of the selection committee, but it kept the Huskers tied for second in the Big Ten, in the loss column, and it was a 23-point win. That was needed.
The NCAA selection committee released its bracket preview on Saturday. This is much better than any bracketology because it’s a preview for the actual committee. Nebraska was seeded as a No. 3.
If the Huskers can string together some wins down the stretch, it feels like they should be able to hold onto that seed and shouldn’t drop below a No. 4.
Nebraska baseball gets a ranked win
It wasn’t a great weekend for the Huskers on the baseball diamond. Nebraska baseball dropped games on Friday to Louisville (4-2) and on Saturday to Kansas State (5-3).
That was before rebounding to knock off 16th-ranked Florida State on Sunday night by a score of 10-1. Gavin Glachowicz had five solid innings, allowing five hits and one run on his way to his first win (1-0).
Dylan Carey nearly hit for the cycle. He was 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and five RBI. Nebraska is now 4-3 on the season with one win over a ranked team.
