Husker Big Red Daily: Nebraska Position battles heat up, 2029 QB to visit, more

Welcome to Husker Big Red Daily, your daily stop for the latest Nebraska football news, recruiting buzz, transfer portal updates, and Huskers headlines. Here’s a quick look at the latest storylines surrounding Nebraska athletics.

Nebraska football is onto the second week of fall camp. The pads have come on, and we should start to get more clarity about the depth chart soon.

Matt Rhule talked about some of the position battles in his press conference on Saturday ahead of Nebraska football fan day.

Rhule mentioned the cornerback room specifically. Jeremiah Charles and Victor Evans are among the top competitors to start at the second boundary cornerback spot, with Danny Odem and Bryson Webber also in the mix.

That’s going to be an interesting battle to watch. Running back is another. It still feels like Mekhi Nelson and Isaiah Mozee will come out of call as the top two backs for the Huskers.

As far as the offensive line, a name to watch is Gunnar Gottula. Rhule confirmed that he’s 100 percent and competing for the right tackle job after starting 16 games at left and right tackle the past two seasons.

Looking back at fall camp so far, here are five things we have learned, along with our biggest takeaways from the first few days of Nebraska football fall camp. 

2029 QB to visit Nebraska football

Lord Malik Heru, a highly-touted quarterback in the 2029 recruiting class, will take a Game day visit to Lincoln this fall. He’s out of Virginia, and James Franklin is working hard on him. He’s got over a dozen Power-4 offers, which include teams like Alabama, Auburn, Vanderbilt, and South Carolina, along with North Carolina, SMU, and Nebraska.

Heru is expected to visit eight programs in the fall. Nebraska football is one of them along with Virginia, Virginia Tech, SMU, Kentucky, Auburn, Alabama, and South Carolina. The Huskers will be hosting some 2028 quarterback targets, too, this fall. 

Heru feels like he could be one of the Huskers top targets in the 2029 class. He’s not ranked yet, but feels like a future blue-chip prospect.

Tory Pittman is “locked in” on Nebraska football

One of Nebraska’s top-100 commitments in the 2027 class, Tory Pittman, confirmed with Bryan Munson of Husker Online that he will visit Nebraska this fall. He also said he’s “locked in” with the Huskers after flirting with LSU and Miami over the summer.

The Huskers are trying to add Ahmad Hudson to the 2027 class in an effort to flip him away from LSU, but from a Nebraska perspective, there seems little chance of Pittman or Trae Taylor flipping somewhere else.

Nebraska might have to defend the commitments other Timi Aliu and Jordan Agbanoma, but this should still be the best recruiting class for the Big Red since the days of Bill Callahan.
