Husker Big Red Daily: Fall camp tidbits and blue-chip buzz for Nebraska football

Nebraska football has completed two days of fall camp. The pads haven’t even come on yet. That will happen on Friday, but still there are some early takeaways.

Dana Holgorsen met with the Huskers Radio Network after practice on Thursday. He raved about Anthony Colandrea. The Nebraska football OC said he knew about the playmaking ability, but the arm talent and the ability to process from the pocket have been impressive.

Holgorsen said that he has “checked all the boxes.”

Nebraska also feels good about the fact that it has three quarterbacks on the roster who have started Power-4 games before. TJ Lateef and Daniel Kaelin are also competing. They feel like they are duking it out for the backup quarterback job.

That seems to be the only competition at quarterback. That’s not the case at running back. Holgorsen said that he feels good about all five backs, including Kwinten Ives. Regardless of who winds up starting at running back, it feels like it will be a running-back-by-committee situation.

Holgorsen also said he feels good about the tight end room, even giving Carter Nelson a mention. He said it can take longer for players at those positions to develop. It would be great if Nelson made some sort of impact on offense this season. We’ll see, but Holgorsen seems to feel really good about the offense.

Blue-chip recruiting buzz for Nebraska football

The top quarterback targets for the 2028 class, Anthony Turner and Jaxson Carper, are expected to visit this fall, according to Tim Verghese of Inside Nebraska. 

Turner is a 6-foot-5, 190-pound quarterback out of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He’s ranked No. 227 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings in the 2028 class. The Huskers offered in May. 11 teams have offered since May 7. LSU, Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, and Colorado have all offered recently.

The fall visit is a good sign for Nebraska, but this will be a competitive recruitment. Out of California, Carper is 6-foot-3, 160 pounds, according to 247 Sports, which has him ranked No. 472 overall in the 2028 class. Four-star running back Noel Washington is also expected to visit for the Washington game on October 31.

Nebraska usually recruits one running back per class. It has under Rhule at least. Nelson (3), Isaiah Mozee (4), Jamal Rule (5), and Tikey Hayes (4) have a lot of eligibility left. The 6-foot, 185-pound running back, ranked as a four-star via the 247 Sports composite rankings (No. 326), will visit for the Washington game. The Huskies could be the top contender.

The Huskers are also hosting an elite wideout this fall, too.
