The transfer portal opens officially for college football on January 2nd, but Nebraska football and other teams are already scouting the players available.
There is certainly contact happening between schools and agents, etc. That’s why you hear rumblings about where Dylan Raiola will land before his name is even officially in the transfer portal.
That’s just the way of college football. As far as Nebraska is concerned, TJ Lateef might wind up as the starting quarterback in 2026. Yet, he will need to be pushed by a veteran. The Huskers need another player with starting experience in the room.
Aidan Chiles is one quarterback that Matt Rhule is said to have an eye on, according to Pete Nakos of On3.com. We broke down his potential fit with Nebraska football. He’s got a decent floor and a high ceiling.
Kenny Minchey of Notre Dame was another potential target. He barely lost out on the starting job to CJ Carr at Notre Dame. However, that makes me skeptical that he would want to come to another school where he could risk losing a QB battle to Lateef. He will want to go somewhere that guarantees him a job, or where he has a strong likelihood of winning the job.
At Nebraska, it feels like a 50/50 proposition. Dylan Lonergan, the former Alabama and Boston College quarterback, who started nine games for the Eagles last season, with 12 touchdown passes compared to five interceptions, could be another option. He’s not a dual-threat, though, which seems like a priority moving forward.
Other names will surely emerge. Iowa State’s Rocco Becht would be a home run. As a one-year option, he would be worth millions.
Buy games for the Huskers on the basketball court
There will be a Nebraska basketball doubleheader at the Vault on Sunday. The women’s basketball team, which is 11-0 and ranked 21st, will host Cal Baptist. That will be followed by the men’s basketball team taking on North Dakota, a 5-9 team from the Summit League.
The men’s game is at 7 p.m (BTN). The women play at 11 a.m. (BIG+). Nebraska basketball teams should win both games easily as a tune-up for the restart of Big Ten play, which comes on December 29th for the women (USC) and January 2nd for the men (Michigan State).
Fred Hoiberg’s team is a 29.5-point favorite against North Dakota. My prediction is that the Huskers get off to a slow start, but cover. Braden Frager will have a good night.
