Husker Big Red Daily: 5-star freshman turning heads, elite DL to visit, and an epic volleyball match

Andrew Marshall is the only guy who has started games for Nebraska at the cornerback spot. Jeremiah Charles has played in every game the past two seasons with zero starters. Victor Evans started nine games last season for FIU. Odem is a true freshman. The 6-foot, 195 has gotten stronger since the spring, Williams said.

That’s good news. Charles or Evans will likely be the starter to begin the 2026 Nebraska football season as boundary cornerback. Donovan Jones is a nickel. But it feels like only a matter of time before Odem takes over the job. My hope is that it happens by the time Big Ten play rolls around. He’s just too good to keep on the bench.

Blue-chip DL to visit, plus a 2028 in-state QB to watch

One of the top defensive lineman in the 2028 recruiting class, Tayaun Lawrence, a 6-foot-3, 250-pounder out of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, will be on campus for a Nebraska football game this fall, according to Bryan Munson of Husker Online. 

Lawrence is ranked as the No. 138 prospect overall in the 2028 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Oregon, Ohio State, Cal, and Georgia Tech are among the teams listed as “warm” according to his 247 Sports profile.

Lawrence recently included the Huskers in his top five. This feels like it will be an uphill battle, however, the Huskers have done well at Bishop Gorman, and it feels like there could be an opening.

Nebraska also extended a Game Day invite to 2028 Omaha North quarterback Dominic Yancy. He posted on X he will visit this fall. He’s 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, according to his Rivals profile. He completed 62 percent of his passes last season with eight touchdowns, 505 yards and one rushing touchdown. Teams like Wyoming and South Dakota have been showing interest.

The 2028 QB board for Nebraska has a pair of blue-chip options. They are visiting the Huskers this fall, too. Yancy is further down the board and doesn’t have an offer currently. That could change based on what he does during the 2026 season for Omaha North.

Nebraska volleyball ranked No. 1, will face second-ranked Texas

In a move that shouldn’t surprise anyone, the Nebraska volleyball team is ranked No. 1 in the preseason AVCA Coaches Poll. Ranked second are the Texas Longhorns, who will play the Huskers on Sunday, August 30, in the Players Era Showcase at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The match will be shown on Fox.

Nebraska hasn’t played Texas since their loss to the Longhorns in the 2023 National Championship Game. The Huskers have been eliminated by the eventual national champion in each of the past three seasons, losing to Penn State in the Final Four in 2024, and Texas A&M in the Elite 8 in 2025.
