Nebraska football is going to add a transfer portal quarterback this offseason. The only question is which one.

For the first time, Nebraska has been connected to a player at the position in the portal, as Pete Nakos of On3.com offered up some transfer portal intel on Saturday. One nugget of information was that Nebraska was interested in Aidan Chiles.

It’s preliminary. Nakos mentioned that Matt Rhule is interested in a variety of quarterbacks, and that the Huskers haven’t settled on one option yet.

Some thoughts on Aidan Chiles

Chiles has been mentioned by some in the Nebraska media (Steve Sipple) as an interesting option. Chiles has played in 30 games over the past three seasons for Michigan State and Oregon State. He played in 21 games for the Spartans before getting benched near the end of this season.

Chiles led the Big Ten in interceptions in 2024 (11). He had 13 touchdown passes, and for his career, Chiles has 27 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, and threw for 181 yards per game with MSU, completing 60.8 percent of his passes. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound quarterback has 531 career rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.

The former blue-chip recruit has arm talent. He has struggled as a passer the past two seasons, but he brings the dual-threat element to the offense. That’s what makes him intriguing.

Chiles has the ability to play in the NFL. There were times during his 10-touchdown, three-interception junior season that he looked like that player. He would be a reclamation project, but a much cheaper option.

Nebraska football needs a proven quarterback. Chiles is proven to the point that he can win Big Ten games. With a better roster around him, and better coaching, which he would get at Nebraska compared to Michigan State, the Huskers might get the most of him.

That would be the best-case scenario. The worst is that he’s a solid backup for Lateef next season.
