Podcast: Q&A with future Nebraska Football kicker Tristan Alvano

The Husker Big Red Podcast caught up with future Nebraska Football kicker Tristan Alvano and covered a bunch of different topics.

You always hear about how special teams are 1/3 of the game. However, sometimes, people tend to forget that. Nebraska football fans won’t, not anytime soon.

The 2021 season taught Husker fans everywhere the importance of the kicking game and while Nebraska football was better in both areas during the 2022 season, there is still room for improvement.

One of the smartest moves that Mickey Joseph made as the interim head coach was taking that supposed emphasis on special teams and putting the words into action.

After watching Tristan Alvano make five field goals, including a 46-yarder to win the Class A state championship for Omaha Westside, Joseph told Alvano, “I don’t want you to leave the state.”

It’s a sentiment that Matt Rhule and Ed Foley shared too. In their first conversation with Alvano, they reaffirmed his scholarship offer and after what Tristan said was an “amazing” official visit, he announced his commitment to the Nebraska football program — a program his grandfather has season tickets to watch.

Alvano said he grew up watching the likes of Kris Brown, Alex Henrey, Barrett Pickering, and Connor Culp. He said he didn’t start playing football until his freshman year of high school but that it became apparent he had a knack for kicking.

The No. 6 kicker in the 2023 recruiting class according to the 247 sports composite rankings and a three-star recruit, Alvano said one of his goals is to win the Lou Groza Award. He also said he hopes to make a game-winning kick for Nebraska football someday and with his history, I don’t doubt for a second that he will.
