A magical season on the diamond for the Nebraska softball and baseball teams could be coming to an end on Sunday.

Both Husker squads could be facing elimination, depending on what happens in the restart of the Nebraska baseball team’s game against Ole Miss in the Lincoln Regional in the 1-0 game. Nebraska was down 6-3 heading to the ninth inning, before a rain delay eventually led to the game being suspended.

Nebraska baseball has pulled off some incredible comebacks this season, but if they fail to rally, they will have to win twice on Sunday to keep the season alive, starting with Arizona State, which defeated South Dakota State 17-0 on Saturday.

Nebraska and Ole Miss will restart at 12 PM CST. The next game will be at 2 PM. If the Huskers are in that game and win, they would then play Ole Miss again at 7.

The Huskers would need to win those two games and win on Monday to advance to the Super Regional. If they end up losing the 1-0 game to Ole Miss, which is currently 6-3 in favor of the Rebels. Jett Buck and Max Buettenback hit home runs to account for the three runs. Buettenback’s two-run shot in the eighth trimmed the lead from five to three.

The Nebraska softball team’s back is against the wall

Saturday was an uncharacteristic day for Jordy Frahm. The Nebraska softball starting pitcher walked the first batter of the game and hit the second before giving up a three-run home run and the Huskers never recovered.

Frahm also made an error in the field at first base. She was pulled after two innings in the circle for Alexis Jensen, who didn’t give up an earned run in four innings of work.

Rhonda Revelle defended her decision to start Frahm, despite pitching 10 innings on Thursday. Softball pitchers aren’t like baseball hurlers, and don’t need as much rest.

Frahm is the National Player of the Year. Alabama also used the same starter as in game one, so the decision. made perfect sense. Revelle said she would do it again. Jordy just didn’t have it. My guess is that she gets the ball again with the season on the line today against Texas at 2 PM CST on ABC.

Texas, the defending national champion, knocked out Mississippi State on Friday to keep its season alive. Nebraska softball and the Longhorns split during the regular season, with Texas winning on Feb. 6, 15-10. Nebraska won 8-5 on Feb. 7.

If Nebraska softball survives against Texas, it would advance to the semifinals, where it would play Alabama, needing to beat the Crimson Tide on Monday and again on Tuesday in order to advance to the Women’s College World Series championship.

The Huskers will have to win three straight games against the defending national champions, and the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, so if Nebraska reaches the title round, it will have earned it.
