Nebraska football was hoping to land the commitment of four-star cornerback Bryson Webber more than a week ago, but after a shakeup in the coaching staff, Webber delayed his announcement.
In a way, that could be viewed as a positive sign for Nebraska football. After the departure of former secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator Evan Cooper, if Webber was going to go somewhere else, he could have announced it on the same day. Cooper leaving wouldn’t have impacted him.
Yet, it’s clear that Webber was going to pick Nebraska before everything happened with Cooper. Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule acted quickly and hired former Buffalo Bills secondary coach John Butler, who also worked for the Texans and was once the DC at Penn State.
Butler hasn’t been involved in recruiting for a long time after spending a decade in the NFL. But, he knows how to develop defensive backs and should be able to sell his NFL experience to a guy like Webber.
Nebraska football is in the top 3 for cornerback Bryson Webber
The position coach does play an important role in the recruiting process, but it’s not the only thing that matters. Butler will have to build that relationship with Webber, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback out of Missouri City, Texas ranked No. 298 overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Webber announced a top three on Thursday of Nebraska, TCU, and Utah. Since no other contenders have emerged, it seems like Webber and Butler have connected, and as long as Webber feels comfortable with him as his position coach it feels like the Huskers will add another blue-chip commitment to the 2025 class. The four-star cornerback told 247 Sports a decision will come this weekend.
