Nebraska basketball is continuing to make noise in the transfer portal, and Tuesday night they received a commitment from former New Mexico forward Josiah Allick. He made the announcement via social media
Allick measures in at 6-foot-8, 235 pounds. He is a local product, and hails from Lincoln. He averaged 8.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in 34 games for New Mexico last season. One of the major highlights of his season was an 18-rebound performance against Boise State on January 20.
Rebounding is going to be the strength of his game for Nebraska basketball. The 7.3 rebounds were second in the Mountain West conference last season. Allick is better from the field, as he shot 55.7% from that distance.
By comparison, he shot 15.8% from three-point range. In short, he is the post presence that Nebraska basketball is going to need.
What can he bring to Nebraska basketball?
Nebraska was ninth in the conference last season with 34.5 rebounds per game. That put them in the bottom tier of the conference. Allick gives them another post presence that will be valuable in the paint.
It may seem like a game tailored to the three-point shot. However, we saw how valuable Derrick Walker was for Nebraska over the course of his career. Walker was a machine in the post for Nebraska basketball. Allick could potentially be that guy as well. His style of game fits the Big Ten nicely, much like Walker’s did.
A busy month for Nebraska basketball
This latest commitment continues what has been a tremendous month for Nebraska basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg. The transfer portal has been very kind to the program. The program has landed Bradley transfer Renik Mast, Iowa transfer Ahron Ulis, and Brice Williams from Charlotte. With Allick’s commitment, Nebraska only has one spot remaining on the roster.
Allick is a major get for the Huskers. The hometown stud should find himself as an impactful player on this roster in short order. This is a must-win year for Hoiberg. Players with talent such as Allick’s will be able to help him win.
