The weekend didn’t go how Nebraska fans wanted on the baseball diamond as the Nebraska Cornhuskers were knocked out by Florida on Sunday after a 17-11 result.

It was the second loss in three days by Nebraska to the Gators, but overall, after a 40-win season, a Big Ten tournament title, and a win in the NCAA tournament, it was a successful season for the Cornhuskers.

Brett Sears was the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year. He’s a senior, so the Huskers will have some work to do on the roster, but there’s enough talent coming back for Nebraska baseball to be among the favorites to win the Big Ten in 2025.

Other notable seniors include Ben Columbus and Cole Evans, but Josh Caron, Drew Christo, Jackson Brockett, Gabe Swansen, Evan Bortst, Riley Silva, Rhet Stokes, Tyler Stone, Joshua Overbeek, Dylan Carey, Mason McConnaughey, and Case Sanderson all have eligibility. McConnaughey will be just a junior next season.

If Nebraska can get all those guys back, plus fill some needs in the transfer portal, there’s reason to believe the Huskers can get back to the NCAA tournament next season. Like Nebraska basketball, hopefully, this trip to the NCAA tournament was the first of many.

Nebraska football ranked by USA Today

Something we covered over the weekend is that Nebraska football is ranked in another post-spring top 25. This is from USA Today which has the Huskers ranked 25th. Dylan Raiola is a big reason for that, plus it’s the second season under head coach Matt Rhule. His teams tend to take a leap in the second year and many in the national media are drinking the Nebraska Kool-Aid.

Priority target enjoys Missouri visit

Chase Loftin is one of the top priorities for Nebraska football in the 2025 recruiting class. The 6-foot-6 tight end ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the state of Nebraska for the 2025, visited Missouri over the weekend.

All visits tend to go well. There’s usually positive buzz but Loftin told Rivals after his visit that “Mizzou is definitely going to be a part of the decision.”

Loftin has visits to Nebraska football, Florida State, and Texas A&M this month. I’ve long said that Rhule will get it done in this recruitment. He’s been tough to beat for in-state kids — just look at the recruitments of Carter Nelson, Daniel Kaelin, and Malachi Coleman.

So I’m a little concerned, but this is how it goes with a national recruit, which Loftin is. But Nebraska football will get its visit — the 9th visit for Loftin to Lincoln — and then we’ll see where things stand.
