More interesting QB options for Nebraska football hit transfer portal

Breaking down some QB options for Nebraska football

Nebraska football needs to add a quarterback from the transfer portal, and the good news is that there are plenty of options available, including two that entered the portal on Thursday night.

When it comes to the quarterbacks, it’s going to be a game of musical chairs. There are rumors that Dylan Raiola will end up at Louisville. Brenden Sworsby, the Cincinnati quarterback who Nebraska fans are familiar with, seems to be trending to Texas Tech, although he might explore the NFL draft, too.

Sam Leavitt seems destined for Oregon, LSU, or Miami.

Drew Mestemaker of North Texas, who led the FBS in passing yards after playing defensive back in high school, is another name to know. There’s also DJ Lagway of Florida and Aidan Chiles of Michigan State, players that Nebraska football should want to part of.

There’s a world where TJ Lateef could be the starting quarterback next season. Some have suggested Nebraska add Zane Flores, a former three-star QB from Nebraska who started some games for Oklahoma State last season, throwing three touchdown pass and seven interceptions as a redshirt freshman.

Lateef was a former Elite-11 quarterback. He was a blue-chip recruit for a reason, and he flashed against UCLA. That’s why it would be nice if he was 100 percent to get a clean evaluation of him against Utah after bowl practices, 15 of them.

Regardless, Nebraska needs another quarterback who has started games or is capable of it, such as Notre Dame’s Kenny Minchey, who lost a tight QB battle with CJ Carr this fall.

Two QB options Nebraska football should consider

There are plenty of decent options, but two more intriguing options entered on Thursday. One is former TCU starting quarterback Josh Hoover, who has passed for over 3,000 yards in each of the past two seasons.  Hoover isn’t much of a runner, but has completed 65.2 percent of his passes for his career. He’s got 9,629 passing yards and 71 touchdowns compared to 33 interceptions. Hoover led the Big 12 with 13 interceptions this season, but has 56 touchdown passes over the past two seasons.

Hoover will surely have a robust market. But Nebraska has money to spend, and it feels like Hoover, while he would certainly cost a pretty penny, might be more affordable than some others on this list.

Another less-expensive option is Beau Pribula, the former Missouri/Penn State quarterback. He played 10 games for Missouri this season with over 1,900 passing yards and 297 rushing yards to go along with six rushing touchdowns. He is a dual-threat. He completed 67 percent of his passes but threw nine interceptions (11 touchdowns).

Still, he’s a guy who could compete with Lateef, but probably wouldn’t drive him to the portal. Missouri went 8-4 this season. Pribula wasn’t a superstar, but Nebraska football could do a lot worse.
