It feels like Nebraska football fans always learn something when Matt Rhule steps to the podium, and Thursday was no different.

The head coach opened his second press conference of fall camp with news that Nebraska fans were hoping wasn’t true — Mac Markway is out for the season. At least. He had a “re-tear” of his ACL. At least that’s what Rhule called it.

It’s hard to say when Markway could return to football, if ever. However, he won’t be on the field this season, despite generating some excitement this offseason and early in fall camp.

The tight end room is still legit. Carter Nelson looks poised for a breakout season. You also have to feel good about Luke Lindenmeyer and Heinrich Haarberg. They won’t be focal points in the passing game, but Dana Holgorsen knows how to use them as blockers and receivers.

Speaking of Holgorsen, the offensive coordinator revealed that Dane Key and Jacory Barney would be among the starters at wide receiver, with Nyziah Hunter not far behind. Quinn Clark and other young players also got a mention. Mehki Nelson keeps generating positive buzz at the running back position. Kwintin Ives is banged up, so the No. 2 job is Nelson’s for the taking.

The offensive line continues to be fascinating. Holgorsen said that he feels much better about the offensive tackle spot with Elijah Pritchett, Gunnar Gottula, Tyler Knaak, and Teddy Prochazka all in the mix. Keep an eye on Prochazka, although it won’t be easy to unseat Gottula either.

Nebraska football seems set on the interior with Rocco Spindler, Justin Evans, and Henry Lutovsky. Spinlder feels so good about the offensive line, he said it could win the Joe Moore Award, which goes to the best offensive line in college football.

That seems a tad optimistic, but I like it all the same.
