Nebraska football has reached the midway point of the 2024 season. The Huskers have their bye week this week and are currently 5-1, one win from bowl eligibility.
Six wins is the first goal, but it’s not the only goal. It’s hard to say where this team will be six games from now, but we definitely haven’t seen the Cornhuskers play their best football.
They are starting to string things together, outside of special teams, which missed three field goals against Purdue and had two blocked punts against Rutgers.
Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule didn’t sweep the issue under the rug. He talked about how it would be an emphasis over the bye week, but there were also reports of it being a major focus last week.
The bright spot for Nebraska football on special teams was Brian Buschini, who earned Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging over 50 yards a punt last weekend. He also had a 30-yard pass and a critical punt before Rutger’s final possessions that pinned the Scarlet Knights back deep.
Nebraska football injury updates
Rhule addressed some injuries on Monday too. He said that Tommi Hill was “close” to playing against Rutgers. Hopefully, he’ll be able to go against Indiana given the extra week of rest.
“I think Tristan’s potentially going to begin the process of testing where he’s at and whatever that means in terms of when he’s comfortable,” the coach said. “Tommi is trending closer and closer. Up until kickoff, we thought he was gonna go. So it’s just a day-by-day thing with him.”
Nebraska football bowl projections after Week 6
The Huskers got five wins last season and weren’t able to get six, despite having four chances. This season, they’ll have six chances to get win No. 6, including two more home games.
Some Husker fans don’t love bowl projections, but some interesting potential matchups are possible starting with the CBS projection of Nebraska against Kentucky in the Music City Bowl.
ESPN analysts Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have Nebraska football going to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl (vs. Duke) and also the Citrus Bowl against Texas A&M.
Athlon Sports also has Nebraska football squaring off against Texas A&M in the Reliaquest Bowl. The Reliaquest Bowl was also the projection of the Action Network, which has the Huskers playing Kentucky.
Of course, another win is needed and a few more are needed to play in a game like the Citrus Bowl, but this Nebraska team feels different. Next up is a ranked opponent (Indiana) on Oct. 19 and that game will be featured on Fox Big Noon Kickoff.
