Nebraska football is getting some national recognition after an eye-opening win over Colorado on Saturday night by a score of 28-10.
It wasn’t just that Nebraska football won the game. It was the way that Nebraska won. The Huskers were a little sloppy in the second half, but so were the officials.
The defense never skipped a beat though. Nebraska’s defensive line dominated to the tune of six sacks. Nebraska intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, as well as blocking a field goal.
Nebraska was better, tougher, and more physical. It wasn’t just a win either, it was an ass-kicking and people are taking notice.
Nebraska football ranked in both polls again
On Sunday, Nebraska was ranked in the top 25 of the Coaches and AP polls for the first time since 2019. It wasn’t all that surprising given Saturday’s result, but I wasn’t expecting Nebraska to be ranked quite this early.
However, it goes beyond that. Stewart Mandel, a college football analyst for The Athletic, has Nebraska football projected to make his 12-team College Football Playoff.
Mandel isn’t alone. Andy Staples didn’t have Nebraska in his 12-team field, but the On3.com college football expert does have the Huskers among his first four teams out.
Much of the optimism relates to the schedule. Ohio State looms in Game 8, but the toughest tests before then are home games against Illinois and Rutgers, as well as road games against Indiana and Purdue.
The Huskers should be favored to win all four of those games, plus the Northern Iowa game next Saturday. But this program hasn’t been able to walk and chew gum in a long time.
So keep the focus on one game at a time. That’s the job of the people inside the building. Those outside of it, can’t keep their excitement about Nebraska football bottled up and it’s hard to blame them.
