College football recruiting is wild and it’s not surprising to hear that Nebraska football quarterback commitment TJ Lateef might be keeping his options open.

In an interview with Tom Loy of 247 Sports following the Elite 11 quarterback competition in California, the four-star quarterback prospect from the 2025 class was asked if his recruitment was shut down.

The response isn’t one that Nebraska football fans are going to love. Lateef, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback out of Orange, California, told Loy, “I won’t speak on that.”

Loy then ended the interview by saying Lateef “potentially” has a future at Nebraska and Lateef said, “Yes sir.”

Should Nebraska football fans be worried about a flip?

Nothing is ever official until Signing Day. The recruitment of Dylan Raiola should have taught Nebraska football fans that. Until recruits sign the dotted line, you have to defend your commitments and hold onto them.

Matt Rhule and company know this and they know it as well as anyone because they had two blue-chip prospects flipped late in 2024 by Ohio State and Miami.

I’m certain teams will come after Lateef. He’s the 18th-ranked quarterback in the 2025 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s also ranked No. 227 overall. Most teams have their 2025 quarterback right now but plenty of big-name programs could try to steal an Elite-11 prospect away from the Huskers.

There hasn’t been any buzz about a flip or a certain team. But when Lateef talked about Nebraska, he didn’t sound super excited about Lincoln. Basically, he said it’s a place where you can’t get in trouble.

“The biggest thing was the communication portion (with the coaches),” Lateef said. “I felt wanted and I felt like that was the place for me to be. Being in Lincoln, there’s not a lot of things you can do to get in trouble. My family felt safe for me in that environment.”

The interview did make me feel a little uneasy about Lateef’s commitment. But, there’s a reason Nebraska landed it in the first place. They pushed for him harder than a lot of other programs and until the four-star QB visits another school, I wouldn’t worry too much.

Keep those comments in the back of your mind though, Nebraska football coaches.
