Nebraska football has been projected to land another player from the transfer portal. This time at linebacker.

You never quite know how things are going to play out with transfer portal recruits. There are a lot of different factors at play and despite Nebraska football hosting former Syracuse linebacker Stefon Thompson last weekend, there was some thought that Florida State was the favorite.

However, if that was true, things have taken a shift as there has been a flood of expert projections in favor of Nebraska football over the past two days from On3.com. The On3.com prediction machine now gives Nebraska a 96.9 percent chance to land the 6-foot, 220-pounder.

What makes Thompson so attractive for the Huskers, beyond the fact that they need a linebacker, is that he’s familiar with Tony White’s defense after playing for him at Syracuse. So it’s not going to take Thompson any time to adjust to the 3-3-5, plus White will already know what kind of player he’s getting.

In terms of what Nebraska will get if those projections prove to be true, Thompson is a guy with 171 career tackles as well as 19.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. He also has four career forced fumbles, as well as 100 career solo tackles.

Thompson feels like an ideal replacement for Luke Reimer or Nick Henrich. I’m not sure about his ability in pass coverage, but he’s a playmaker. Reimer and Henrich were both successful on blitz packages last year and Thompson would be a plug-and-play guy in that regard.

He would add immediate depth to a position of need. He’s also got experience and should have multiple years of eligibility. The 2020 COVID Year doesn’t count. The 2022 season will also serve as a redshirt year, so he would be another multi-year transfer who could be an immediate starter.
