Nebraska football had a big recruiting weekend over the weekend, and some positive Intel came out of all of the visits. Rivals’ Tim Verghese put together a report of what he heard and his thoughts on some recruits. One of the hot-button names over the weekend was linebacker Dawson Merritt.

Meritt has been connected to Nebraska for quite some time now. Reports have gone all the way as far back as March, when he scheduled an official visit for April. Now, he is down to deciding between Nebraska football and Alabama. There were reports this week that Alabama was making a push for Merritt, but it seems like Nebraska is still very much in play.

The linebacker is currently the 11th overall linebacker in the 2025 class, and the third overall player in his class from the state of Kansas per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. As of right now, he is deciding between Alabama and the Huskers.

Verghese was able to grab some Intel from Meritt, and it sounds like things are trending in Nebraska’s favor. Of course, this is recruiting. Things can change in an instant, and situations are always fluid. Even still, it sounds like things are trending in the right direction for Nebraska.

Coming out of his Alabama official visit, despite positive momentum around the Crimson Tide, I maintained I didn’t think the door was closed on Nebraska. Now, that door is wide open, Nebraska worked hard this week to re-gain momentum with him. A decision could come any day now, and if you asked me to input a Futurecast, I’d put one in for Nebraska based on what I’m hearing there right now.

What does this mean for Nebraska Football?

This would be a massive pickup for Nebraska, as they look to establish another stellar linebacker class. Christian Jones is also another name to watch for over the next couple of weeks at the position. If Nebraska was able to land both Jones and Merritt, that would be extremely solid.

As far as Merritt s concerned, he has the speed and aggressiveness to be able to fit seamlessly in the 3-3-5 defensive scheme.

Time will tell how this recruitment ends up going. However, it would be reasonable to feel very positive about Merritt coming to Nebraska. Based off of reports, and what I personally have heard, it seems like the positive momentum Nebraska football has worked to build is working. This would be another major get for a defensive unit that looks to be strong in 2024 and beyond.
