Welcome to Husker Big Red Daily, your daily stop for the latest Nebraska football news, recruiting buzz, transfer portal updates, and Huskers headlines. Here’s a quick look at the latest storylines surrounding Nebraska athletics.
At the start of the season, we said that Nebraska football needed a 5-0 start. Matt Rhule needed a 5-0 start, and following a 48-23 win over Maryland, the Huskers are 5-0.
Nebraska ended that game on Saturday scoring 34 consecutive points. Yes, there were too many penalties. The Huskers could have played cleaner football, but they also covered the spread for the fifth consecutive games.
In two Big Ten games, Rob Aurich and the Blackshirts have allowed three second-half points. Aurich has been impressive. This entire team has. Nebraska ran for over 200 and passed for over 200 for the fourth time in five games this season.
Next up are the defending national champs.
Biggest home game in 25 years for Nebraska football
The 7th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers will come to Lincoln this week, fresh off a 47-15 win over Rutgers on Saturday. It will be the first matchup of 5-0 teams at Lincoln Memorial Stadium since No. 1 Nebraska hosted No. 2 Oklahoma back in 2001.
That was the game where Eric Crouch caught a touchdown pass to seal a 20-10 win for the Huskers. Crouch’s touchdown reception is one of the most iconic players in Cornhusker history. It’s also the reason he won the Heisman Trophy.
Nebraska is just outside the top 25 poll. It seems like the media and coaches aren’t going to believe in the Huskers until they beat a team like Indiana.
Safe to say, this is the biggest game of Matt Rhule’s tenure. He could cure a lot of ills with an upset win.
Nebraska vs. Indiana odds
Nebraska opened as a 9.5-point underdog, but by Monday morning, the line has dropped to 7.5. The Hoosiers are still favored by those 7.5 points. The over/under is 52.5.
5-star visitor plus more Nebraska News and Notes
Ahmad Hudson made a surprise trip to Lincoln this weekend. National experts talked about this recruitment shutting down. Some even reported Hudson wouldn’t visit any other programs outside of LSU.
Well, those reports were not accruate. Hudson visited this weekend, which leaves the door wide open for the Huskers to flip the five-star tight end.
A win on Saturday will surely help. Even if that doesn’t happen, this feel like a 50/50 deal again. This recruitment won’t be officially over until signing day either way.
The Nebraska volleyball team also improved to 5-0 with a sweep over Maryland on Saturday.
Andi Jackson led Nebraska with an all-around performance, totaling 12 kills on .455 hitting with six service aces, five blocks and four digs. Jackson tied a rally-scoring era program record with six aces in a three-set match, tying Annika Albrecht (2015), Michelle Lynch(2004) and Anna Schrad (2002).
The Huskers also improved their win streak in road and neutral-site matches to 22 matches, which is tied for 12th all-time in NCAA history and the longest nationally since 2011 (Huskers.com).
