Husker Big Red Daily: How Anthony Colandrea can improve, O-line movement, national honors for Andi Jackson

Nebraska football starting quarterback Anthony Colandrea has been everything that the Huskers could have wanted this offseason when they were looking for a quarterback.

Colandrea has accounted for 262 total yards per game. He’s got 12 touchdowns and just one interception. That interception was on a pass that hit Jacory Barney in the hands. It came out and went to a defender.

That was the only mistake Colandrea has made this season. In the Big Ten opener on Saturday, the Nebraska quarterback had 278 total yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. It didn’t even feel like it was close to his best game.

Turns out, Nebraska’s offensive coordinator agrees. Dana Holgorsen said Colandrea helped the Huskers give up zero sacks, compared to five last season against Michigan State. But he said he also bailed out of the pocket a little too early

“He makes quick decisions, which is good — that means no sacks,” Holgorsen said. “But he missed some things in the pass game that if he stands in there a little bit longer, then he can go to different places and get through his progressions. I’d like to see that out of ‘Ant,’ which is going to force those guys to protect.”

Possible O-line shakeup

Holgorsen also talked about the offensive line and suggested that Gunnar Gottula could move inside to guard. Brendan Black is dealing with an injury. Tree Babalade has also been playing more and more at right tackle. He’s been playing well, too.

It feels like Babalade will eventually be the starting right tackle. Gottula could move to the bench, although he will still get some playing time. So far, the rotation has worked out well, but I’ve always thought Gottula would excel as a guard.

Andi Jackson wins the National Player of the Week award

After being named Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts this past week, Nebraska’s Andi Jackson was named AVCA National Player of the Week after she averaged 3.33 kills per set and 1.56 blocks per set last week for the top-ranked Huskers.
