Nebraska Cornhuskers news: Injuries mount for Nebraska football, recruiting updates, and more

Nebraska football is dealing with some injuries, another top recruiting target to decide soon, and more Nebraska Cornhuskers news.

The injury bug has hit Nebraska football. It’s fall camp, so it’s not surprising and for the most part, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have avoided major injuries.

Yet, there is one big name that will be out for the season and that’s freshman Jack linebacker Maverick Noonan. Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule announced that Noonan would miss the entire 2023 season due to injury. It’s not an ACL injury, but he will be out for six months.

For the Nebraska Cornhuskers, this hurts now, and in the future. Noonan was competing to be on the two-deep as a freshman and there’s a good chance he would have seen some playing time this season, especially because Nebraska football needs pass rushers to emerge.

Now, instead of building on his freshman season, Noonan will be rehabbing and trying to get back to 100 percent. It doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be able to contribute when he comes back in 2024, but missing the entire season due to injury will hurt his development. There’s no question about it.

That’s why it’s such a bummer.

Unfortunately, for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, it’s not the only injury issue either as Marcus Washington, Zavier Betts, and Malachi Coleman missed practice due to injury. Washington just recovered from a hand injury and is now dealing with an ankle. He’s expected back this weekend.

Teddy Prochazka is still practicing in the yellow jersey (non-contact) and his status for Week 1 is up in the air. Nouredin Nouili has also been hampered by an injury. That’s why Henry Lutovsky has been getting more reps at right guard. However, Nouili is still my projected starter for Nebraska football on the offensive line.

Injuries are part of fall camp and so far, only a few have been season-ending and hopefully, that remains the case over the next couple of weeks, because health is incredibly important to the Huskers’ bowl hopes in 2023.

Jayshawn Ross timeline update

There has been plenty of chatter among Nebraska football fans about Grant Brix, who according to Bryan Munson of Husker Online, will announce his commitment on August 25th — a good sign for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Brix is a top-100 recruit overall in the 2024 class and is rated as the No. 5 offensive tackle via the 247 Sports composite rankings. It would be a massive commitment and things appear to be trending in the right direction for Nebraska football.

The Huskers have also built some positive momentum with four-star EDGE Jayshawn Ross. He’s ranked 311th overall in the 2024 class via the 247 Sports composite rankings. Munson reports that a decision for Ross could come this month too.

Tennessee is the top contender for his commitment. Ross also took an unofficial visit there during the last part of July, so Nebraska football needs to watch out for the Vols in this recruitment.

Nebraska football adds legacy as walk-on commitment in 2024

Trent Uhlir is 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, and is a Nebraska football legacy. His father and three uncles played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Now he will too as the Battle Creek, Nebraska standout announced his commitment to the Huskers as a preferred walk-on this week in the 2024 class.

Uhlir has visited Nebraska football numerous times since Matt Rhule has been the coach. He also took part in the fullback camp and is expected to play fullback or linebacker in Lincoln.
