Whenever Matt Rhule does an interview or steps to the podium, you know you’re going to hear some good stuff from the Nebraska football head coach.
Rhule is honest. He’s insightful and he’s passionate about Nebraska football. Frankly, he’s a great interview and a great representative for not just the University of Nebraska, but the entire state.
The man has accepted and embraced everything that is Nebraska. Now, he just needs to win.
I’ve predicted numerous times that the Huskers will make a jump this season. Recently, I gave three reasons why Nebraska football will make the postseason.
On Wednesday, at Big Ten Media Days, Rhule spoke of a bowl game as a certainty, saying: “When we go to our bowl game, we’ll have 30 college graduates on our team.”
“Just a matter of when”
Rhule has spoken like this before, saying it’s a matter of when, when asked what it would be like for Nebraska to play games with playoff implications at Memorial Stadium.
It does have the feel of when, not if. But that’s been the feeling since 2016. Even Rick Neuheisel, the former Colorado head coach, commented this week on how he can’t believe Nebraska hasn’t made a bowl since 2016.
It’s baffling and it’s time for that drought to end. The goals for this team are much higher though. 6-6 seems like the floor when you look at the talent and the schedule, although the last five games are brutal.
In the first seven games, Nebraska faces one team picked to finish in the top 10 of the Big Ten by the media. That’s Rutgers. There is also Colorado. Nebraska also has road games against Indiana and Purdue — two teams picked to finish last, as well as a home game against Illinois.
7-0 might be a stretch, but the Huskers will likely be favored in every game, and with a nasty defense, and a former five-star starting quarterback, there’s no excuse.
Time for Nebraska football to start winning again
Last season, quarterback was the issue. Rhule knew it and so did everyone else. That’s why Nebraska fooball was aggressive with NIL to pursue a stud and they got one in Dylan Raiola, who could have the impact of Tommie Frazier, Eric Crouch, or Scott Frost when all is said and done.
But also, how many times have we, as Nebraska football fans been convinced, that the bowl drought was going to end? We have chugged the Kool-Aid so many times, only to be disappointed, so something else Rhule said really resonated with me.
“We think we have a really good team, and we think we’re going to be a team people have to deal with this year. Guys are getting it done in a lot of different areas. Now we gotta get it done on Saturdays.”
I agree, coach, it’s time to get it done.
