First things first, it was a heartbreaking night on Thursday for the fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The volleyball team battled but fell short in an epic five-set match against Penn State.

Nebraska won the first two sets and led 22-16 in the fourth. The Nebraska Cornhuskers had two chances at match point, but Penn State stayed alive and captured the fifth set 15-13. Nebraska finished the season 33-3. They were also co-Big Ten Champions and made the Final Four for the third time in four years.

So thank you, ladies, you had a truly incredible season.

Thursday was also a busy day for Nebraska football in the transfer portal, landing the commitment of Nyziah Hunter, a dynamic wideout from Cal, who could be the No. 1 next season, and also 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive lineman Gabe Moore from Mississippi State.

Moore hasn’t played any college football yet. But he was expected to be part of the two-deep for Mississippi State before he medically redshirted in 2024. This is about upside and that’s not a bad thing when talking about a 6-foot-4  defensive lineman, who used to be an EDGE but is now 290 pounds.

While the Huskers missed on offensive tackle Isaiah World on Thursday, according to Sean Callahan of Husker Online, it wasn’t about money. He is reporting that Nebraska football offered more money than Oregon, which should make you feel better about the Huskers’ pursuit of the No. 2 offensive tackle in the transfer portal, tackle Fa’alili Fa’amoe.

Fa’amoe visited this week, as did former Wake Forest offensive lineman Keagan Trost. Nebraska football fans are looking for some offensive line help and it’s clear that the coaching staff agrees. There is also a need for a defensive tackle, but like offensive tackles, elite players at that position don’t grow on trees.

One bit of news that stings is that transfer portal cornerback Andrew Marshall left Nebraska for his visit to Miami. The Hurricanes are a team to watch with any transfer portal recruitment. The 6-foot-1 cornerback was All-Big Sky last season and could be an immediate starter for the Huskers in the secondary.

In terms of needs, I’d say offensive tackle, defensive tackle, and cornerback are the top three. Nebraska could use another EDGE, another offensive lineman (guard), and probably another receiver — maybe even two corners.

But the Huskers have realistic targets at all of those positions, except DT and there is still plenty of time. Just because the dead period comes at the end of this week and the portal window closes, technically on Dec. 28 doesn’t mean the activity is over.

Visits and commitments will go into January. Players on playoff teams have five days after their season is over to enter the portal too, so there is a long way to go.

So far, the Huskers have added a four-star pass rusher, a four-star wide receiver, two of the top specialists available, an FCS All-Conference D-lineman, and a DL with huge upside.

There is work to do, but Nebraska is off to a solid start and the Huskers are far from finished.
